Hey guys!!

I just got a NY Yankees order and would LOVE to replicate something similar to the NY cap cake on this website...

How on earth did they do it???

http://www.confetticakes.com/sports3a.html

I'm thinking sculpted with MMF or something similar?! How would they make the peak part? It's fab! Love it.

We're pretty much on the same boat because I have to do the same cap next week. There's a CC member (MsSugarBaker) who did a great job recreating a cap (http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=allby&uname=MsSugarBaker&cat=0&pos=11). She told me to use a half of a ball pan and 6 inch pan. I got the cakes ready and frozen. I'll probably work on the brim this weekend. Goodluck!

Looks like the cap section is made from 1/2 of the sports ball cake pan or a lyaer cake that was scuplted....then covered in fondant and painted. The bill of the cap could be gun paste.

I'd bet the bill is gumpaste, for sure.

Think MMF would dry out hard enough if you made it a long time before - for the bill?

I'VE GOT IT ALL FIGURED OUT....
FIRST, YOU GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES AND BOW YOUR HEAD.
THEN YOU ASK THE WONDERFUL SUGAR GODDESS AND HER HUSBAND THE CAKE GOD (WHO I BELIEVE IS DUFF GOLDMAN INCARNATE) TO BESTOW THEIR MAGICAL LUSTER DUST ON YOU FROM BUTTERCREAM HEAVEN AND REALEASE THE POWER AND THE CREATIVE ABILITY TO CREATE CAKES LIKE THAT.
OTHER THAN THAT....I HAVE NO IDEA, DEAR! THOSE ARE SOME NICE CAKES THOUGH!!!

She sculpts most of her cakes. I believe the brim is made out of gumpaste.

I e-mailed them once with a specific question and they got back to me the next day.

I agree, it's probably sculpted cake with a gumpast brim.

She does a lot of painting on fondant as well.

OK now I'm going to sound really stupid... hey, I'm still learning!! lol

BUT, how do you paint fondant - you mean spray it? or is there a way without a sprayer and what do you use for paint?

I've never done it, but I think that you can paint using a combination of luster dust and vodka (or extract) or gel cloring thined with vodka as well.

Anyone know for sure?

You can paint fondant with a mixture of gel color and a bit of vodka, or you can spray it with the airbrush, eider way is better to tint the fondant directly with the same color you are painting, that way the it wont show white spots.

Americolor makes a Navy blue gel color. I'll bet that would work!

If you get her new book it gives you the exact directions on how to make that hat. It's Elisa Strauss Confetti Cakes. It's a wonderful book!

Good Luck icon_biggrin.gif

I paint cakes a lot...I would DEFINATELY color the fondant first, and then dilute gel color with a small amount of vodka. The I just "paint" it on using a small paint brush. If you have an airbrush, though, I would recommend doing it that way because it can be difficult to not get streaks when you are painting it.

At least you wouldn't have to worry about getting the fondant smooth!!!! The more "bumpy" the more authentic, right?! LOL!

This exact cake is in her new book - pages 170-173. It even describes how to do the hook in the back and had templates.

it's this book:
