How Crucial Is It To Have A Turn Table?
Decorating By bakingupastorm Updated 16 Mar 2007 , 7:50pm by bakingupastorm
I don't have one and I was wondering if it was a good investment. Does it make cake decorating a lot easier, like you don't know what you would do if you didn't have one or is it more of a take it or leave it kind of thing?
Which ones do you guys recommend and why?
I have been with out one because I couldnt bring it to France due to lack of luggage allowance. I have done a few cakes and each cake I have wished for my turn table. I was able to do the cakes but I sure wanted the extra height and the ease of turning the cake for decorations and icing.
At home I just have the basic plastic wilton one and have no complaints. Its light; turns easily, and sturdy enough for the cakes I do. If I could get a hold of one I would get a professional metal one, but they are heavy. How ever they are a lot more sturdy when it comes to big cakes and last forever.
I could not decorate cakes now without one. I think it should be on the top of any cake decorating list.
I started out with a Wilton table but now I purchased on from a local bakery. So I have two now and I LOVE having two. Makes life easier and cake decorating more enjoyable.

For me, having the turntable is like having opposable thumbs....I would be rather useless with either of these things! ![]()
I just use the lazy susan from my spice cabinet when I need a turntable. I wish it was more elevated, but it has worked fine for what little I've done so far. We don't have much storage space and I don't make enough cakes to justify buying anything else right now.
Oh yes - you need a turntable! I've got a rotating cheese board which is perfect as it can hold more weight than a plastic one and doesn't cost anything like as much as a proper cake turntable.
If you are just getting started, it is not necessary to invest in an expensive one. A lazy susan would work fine. I use my cheap one even when I am working on really big sheet cakes. It is nice not to have to lift the heavy board and cake every time you add a decoration.
I agree. I am hopeless without it! I left mine in the A.C. Moore break room for a week and I was a reck. I have the cheaper Wilton one.
I LURVE mine... I got it from a local shop, but it's double sided - one for a big rectangle (14x20) and the other for a 14" round cake.
Let me see if I can find something similar online. It's not as expensive as those monster ones..
Just DON'T get the tilting Wilton one, everyone hates that!
Look at the VERY bottom of this website:

Somehow, I went 20 years without ever using one. I picked one up on a whim and OMG, how the heck did I survive without one????? As someone mentioned above .... this should be at the top of your cake decorating supply list.
Invest the money. It's SO worth it!
Somehow, I went 20 years without ever using one.
How??? Cake on a plate, plate on a can or something and you moved the plate around manually?
I was baking way before I had a mixer. No problem, people have been baking for hundreds of years, if they could do it so can I. But I can't quite imagine not having a turntable.
MaisieBake, you're right! Plate on a can or an upside down mixing bowl and turn with one hand while applying icing with the other. Once I got the turntable, I was shocked at the difference! Holy Spin-Around, Batman, how dumb can I be?
You might be able to pry a Coke can from my caffeine addicted fingers, but you'll have to cut off my arm to get my turntable away from me now!
Thanks, Debi. It's nice to know the fall-back even if we don't want to have to use it.
as a beginning baker/decorator...i couldn't live w/o mine...i would curl into a ball n cry w/o one...
I have two of the Wilton turntables. One is the flat one with scalloped edge (pretty inexpensive), the other is the raised plastic one. I always use one or the other or both on a project. It's the ease of turning the cake slowly while working and the comfort of having it raised slightly AND turning for other things. That little flat one is a cheap investment I think, and I've used it as my cake plate on many occassions. Get one if you can. You probably won't be sorry.
Yes get one! I bought the tilting Wilton one & got home with it & happened to come across a post about it on here & started reading about how bad it was. Well I took it out of the box to see if it was that bad & IT WAS!
So I went & returned it & got the cheaper Wilton one. I would say having one makes things a lot easier.
I have two of them, and I too couldnt live without them ![]()
Ohhhh, this is a good post. I'm in the same situation....I don't have one right now. I'm wondering why the tilting one is so bad. I've been looking at it and I like the concept. I can get an Ateco one for decent price. Which one should I go for?
I have the 2 sides one also and LOVE it, it is sturdy and you can break it down if need to. It went to Jacksoville FL with me last year when I taught my sister cake basics, If I had no arms I could learn to decorate with my feet...
But don't take my turntable away.
