Just curious about what percentage you would all say actually book with you upon having a consultation about cake designs and prices. What is normal??? May sound like an odd question, but my husband gets mad if someone comes over to taste a cake and take my time, then not book with me. I tell him it's all part of the buisness. I am wondering though at what point a decorator might take it to heart that they need to make some changes either in prices or recipe. So, for those of you that do a good number of weddings, how many actually book with you... not counting friends and family that is!
Thanks bunches!
I would say about 25% actually write me a check, when we do a consultation. The way I usually end the meeting (obviously I'll try and close it), but give them an estimate, and if they decide to go with me, to have them call me and let me know. I'll then write up a contract w/ pricing, send to them for signature, they have to return w/ a 25% deposit, to hold the booking date. The bride may be talking to several cake decorators, and it's understandable if she wants to go home and sleep on her decision. If I don't hear from them in a week or so, I'll touch base with them. Good luck!!
Almost everyone I talk to places an order...usually without a tasting. (OK...almost all are referrals from other brides and friends so they already know I can deliver a great product.) I do most of my orders by email. Many times I never even see the bride! I haven't been advertising, but I'm about to start. Perhaps my numbers will go down when I spread out to a more general market.
I would say that I have about 4 out of 5 brides book with me after a consultation. I have also learned a lot here on CC about doing consultations and have adaped mine to be most professional. So much great information here.
Thanks for the info! I just wondered. I've only had one bride come for a consultation. I gave her an estimate and then never heard from her again. I think she was nervous about the fact that I'd only been doing this a short time.
Had another couple schedule a time to meet with me then cancel the day before. Sorta made me wonder.
Oh well, won't worry about it too much. I'm not ready to be a business yet anyway, just looking for some experience.
