Hey everyone -

I made my first fondant cake with MMF this past weekend. It is pictured in the naughty picture gallery under female cakes. It was for my cousins 50th surprise birthday party - booby cake with purple bodice if you want to look at it. I didn't realize that when you posted a cake in there, it doesn't show up in your photos!

Anyhow, just a few questions since I've never worked with this stuff before. First, to color it, is it correct to add a few drops of color to the piece of mmf you want do dye and just knead it in? Second, because you have to use so much corn starch during rolling, does it affect the taste of the mmf? what is the best way to get all the cornstarch off? I used a pastry brush and wiped off as much as I could, but it was still visible in a few spots. Also, on one spot on the bodice, the fondant kind of separated i guess is the word and there was kind of a flap - what do you do in these instances? I didn't know what to do and just left it.

Please if you can look at the cake and give me honest critisim of it - I'd like to know what you all think of my first fondant cake.

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

It is not necessary to us cornstarch for rolling. It dries the MMF and it is hard to remove. Use a rolling mat, plastic sheeting, or just slick your rolling surface with shortening.

If you are using all one color, add it to the liquid marshmallows, it is easier to blend at that point. If you are coloring a small amount, pull off some of the fondant and (using gloves) knead in the color. If you add a lot of color at this point, you may need to add a light dusting of powdered sugar or some cornstarch to remove the stickiness.

Thank you JoAnn! I'm glad to know that I don't have to use the cornstarch - what a mess!! I will definately use shortening next time. Also, I didn't use gloves and still have (5 days later) fleshtone color around the base of my nails! I will definately use them in the future. Thanks so much for all your help!
