This October, we celebrated the spooky season with an issue of Cake Central Magazine devoted to the famed fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Inspired by Arthur Rackham’s haunting illustrations, our cakemakers created some truly stunning (and spooky!) cakes. Here are a few of our favorites from Volume 4, Issue 10 of Cake Central Magazine!

Heather Sherman of Art2Eat Cakes is no stranger to bringing 2-D illustrations to life in cake. Her beautiful Frog Prince cake, with it’s non-traditional shape and skillfully hand-painted details, perfectly captures the dark mystery of this famous tale.

Leanne’s Pick – President

Cakemaker: Ellen Redmond (SplendorCakes)
Pg. 102

I love the mix of hand-painted and 3-D elements on the cake, also called MDSW (multi-dimensional sugarwork). The forest scene really comes to life with the trees coming out from the flat cake side. I also love the pops of red– it is Little Red Riding Hood after all!

Cakemaker: Liv Sandberg (Rocknrollsweets)
Pg. 79

I can’t get enough of the detail of Liv Sandberg’s cake, and her use of modeling chocolate fits perfectly with the Arthur Rackham theme. The elements of this cake are expertly crafted, and the structure is eye-catchingly unique. Excellent work!

Not only does this design really make the pages of The Goose-Girl come alive, but it does so in cake! Cakemaker Liz Huber did a stunning job of rendering the Rackham-esque accents all in a vintage-inspired palette of colors.

Cakemaker: Carmel Turner (carmie00)
Pg. 90

I love the drama of Carmel Turner’s colorful cake. Her’s is one of the few from this issue that didn’t feature gumpaste figurines. The eye-catching airbrushed landscape is the perfect backdrop for her impressive hand-painted silhouettes. I love way the striking red cape spills down the top tiers, and the contrast between the deep red and bright blue accents is stunning. Though she claims to be a novice with an airbrush, you would never know it looking at her cake!
