Gingerbread--The Swan King
I had to recreate the pattern I lost--but the new one seemed to work. pretty well. The gingerbread body is baked over a small metal bowl. I shaped and baked the wings and tail over crumbled tin foil. The crown is made with royal icing pipe over a pattern on an upside down funnel. I painted him all in royal icing and then piped on a feather pattern. I have pattern and instruction on my website under the Cakes & More Tab, then Gingerbread patterns--website: costumepastimes.com

Icing Church - Christmas
Finally got around to making another Icing Church this year (you'll see the old picture from years ago in my gallery). Royal Icing piped flat on a pattern (from an old woman's magazine from 30 years ago). Melted Jolly Rogers to make the windows and piped tiny little pews for inside the church. Church sits on a round of white fondant and decorated with piped cornelli lace. It will be the centerpiece for my Holiday table!

1St Birthday Cake
First cake I've done for hire in a long time...I need more practice! Chocolate Fudge Cake with Nutella mouse filling and covered all in chocolate fudge buttercream. Bear and present designs I made out of Marshmellow fondant which I love to work with--it tastes good and is so easy to make.

Cake Bites (Or Balls)
I'd never heard of cake balls until I found Cake Central, but then I too found the Bakerella site and saw her cake pops (or bites). She's also came up with creating a chocolate bottom resembling a reeses peanut butter up and then plopping the cake ball into the cup and then coating in chocolate--I just had to give it a try. Took them to work and they disappeared in a few minutes! Search on Bakerella to find her site--it's well worth a peek. I'd like to try other flavors of cake balls from recipies here.

Insect Cake
I belong to a costuming group and we held an Angels and Insects picnic (based on the movie but without the 'strange' stuff). I found these incredible lacquer insects in San Francisco's Chinatown and thought I'd try out a little cake for our picnic. The leaves on the side are gumpaste, iced in fondant with RI flowers and BC piping. Now that I know more maybe I'll try making some insects out of fondant or RI.

Hbo Wedding
A friend of mine owns a corset and costume shop and was invited to have her wedding as part of an HBO special in 1996. Their wedding outfits were all in latex (very gorgeous which is why HBO was interested) and she asked me to make the wedding cake. She wanted Calla Lilies and the cake topper is a wire-sculptured corset body wrapped in some latex strips and filled with gold netting. I piped gold corsets on the bottom layer and gold high-heeled shoes on the top and added RI lace points shaped like shoes.

Penguin Wedding Cake
A friend of mine just loved penguins and bought a glass penguin cake topper. This is the only really good picture I have of the cake. If you look close you can see the little color-flow penguins I made the march around each layer of the cake. This was also the first time I used fondant to cover a cake.

Royal Icing Church
Okay, I'm going through my very old photos (way before the digital days). This is a royal icing church that I piped flat over a pattern. I used fruit roll-ups that I cut into patterns to make stained glass windows. I also created a royal icing altar and rows of pews for the inside. Unfortunately it's the only photo I have of it but since I've decided to get back into decorating I'll be making more for Christmas '08. If you'd like a PDF of the pattern you can PM me.

Gingerbread Swiss Chalet
This was a gingerbread house I learned to make about 35 years ago. The trees are decorated sugar cones, a piping gel pond and rock candy on the roof, chocolate covered pretzels for the fence and chocolate covered raisins for the path stones. All the icicles are royal icing. I got inspired to start making them again this year for Christmas gifts and next year I'll get started a little earlier and make some other houses. I have directions and a pattern on my website if you are interested.
