Make Roses, Peonies and Calla Lilies with DIY Cutters

Cake Central user sweettooth101 found a way to make three flowers, peonies, roses, and calla lilies with inexpensive cutters from her local discount store. She shares how she did it in this step-by-step tutorial.

Materials

  • Round cookie cutters
  • Gumpaste
  • Ball tool
  • Toothpick
  • Foam pad
  • Floral wire
  • Floral tape
  • Petal dust, pink
  • Paint brush
  • Soup spoon

Purchase a set of cookie cutters from any kitchen store, this set of 5 cutters was around $6. Hold the cutter at the joint and give a squeeze to make it into a tear drop shape.

For roses soften the round edge and make your petals for the flower.

For peonies, knick the round edge at a few places, then frill with toothpick and proceed making the flower.

For the calla lily, point side up, soften edge, and pull point a little with ball tool, then place on cone to shape the lily.

Gumpaste Peony Instructions

Cut 3 petals with the smallest cutter. Each petal is knicked at 3 or 4 places, it doesn’t have to be even, some can have deeper v’s.

Thin the edges on a foam pad with a toothpick. Placing your index finger on the toothpick in the middle and rolling it back and forth. This ruffles the petal at different points.

Attach the small petals closely onto a gumpaste ball which has been dried with a wire through it OR you can use a strofoam ball with a wire glued through it.

Continue adding 5 more petal in the same size.

Allow to dry for 20 mins and then dusted with pink colour.

Cut 5 petals in the next size up, and 7 petals in the 3rd size up.

Ruffle the edges and place in tablespoons to dry for 5 minutes or so before gluing on at the base only.

Dust with colour.

Cut Thin and ruffle, thread wire in the centre, place in tablespoons to dry overnight.Dust with colour .Attach with tape around the formed flower.

Great tutorial, thank you! I have done tons of peonies, never thought of doing them out of a rose petal cutter, would have saved me tons of money! And the drying in a tablespoon is brilliant too! Thank you :-)

Thank you so much! This is GREAT! I have been working on roses and ordered some cutters but they weren't as big as I thought they would be. Now that I have seen this, I will be making more out of my round cutters. Thanks again!

Outstanding!!!!! This is a great tutorial. This will save me time and money. I hate having to buy one cutter that does only one thing. Thanks so much

Glad the tutorial is of benefit to all of you, I have learnt soooo much on cake central that I wished I could give back something. I bought the cookie cutters from kitchen plus, they come as a set of 5 in a round tin.

Thanks you so much! Every rose cutter I've seen isn't big enough for the roses I want to make! And I love peonies but have always been too intimidated to try them! New project for this weekend! :D

Hi Yonat, any kitchen store would have round cookie cutters in different sizes. Are you in Isreal at the moment, I am not sure what kind of stores are there.
