1. To begin making cake pops, line your work surface with wax paper. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper and place it just above your work surface. This is where you will assemble your eyeballs.

2. Shape cake pop dough into balls. Refer to this tutorial on how to make shaped pops for the complete process of making cake balls. Once all your cake balls rolled, refrigerate them for at least 10 minutes, or the amount of time it takes to melt and thin the candy coatings.

3. Next, melt the red and white candy coatings in two separate microwave-safe bowls or cups. Thin the coating using paramount crystals.

4. We’re going to use toothpicks to dip the cake balls. Dip toothpicks into the melted white candy coating and insert into the cake balls until they’re about halfway through. Dipping them into the candy coating first will help keep the cake balls from sliding as you dip them. Have your child help you with this part!

red candy base

5. Steps 5 and 6 will need to be done quickly, simultaneously and separately for each cake ball. Pour about a tablespoon of red candy coating onto your wax paper-lined cookie sheet and spread with a toothpick to create a splatter effect. We want this to stay wet for the next step. This is another step where the help of a child would be great! Plus, the messier the splatter, the better!

6. Hold the toothpick to dip each cake ball into the white candy coating, but you don’t want to submerge it completely. Keep the bottom bare so it’s easier to do the next step.

Shake off the excess and then invert the cake ball and use a fork to cradle the cake ball as you remove the toothpick by carefully pulling it down and out.

placing cake ball onto the base

Use the toothpick and fork to place the white cake ball onto the red splatter.

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for each cake ball. Don’t worry about what it looks like now, we’ll fix it in the next step.

7. Now is the time to make any cosmetic repairs. The beauty of this tutorial is that no one will never know anything was ever amiss!

If you didn’t quite get the bottom onto the red splatter, that’s OK! Use a toothpick to add more red candy coating onto the exposed cake area. It’ll look like guts hanging from it. If you have a white pool that surrounds the base of the eyeball, that’s OK too! Just use a toothpick and cover it with more red. Feel free to even make the eyes look like they’re bloodshot!

adding the pupil

8. Now it’s time to add the iris. Snip the corner of the Ziploc bag filled with melted blue candy coating and pipe a circle onto the cake ball. I like to squeeze a dollop of blue then use a toothpick to spread it into a circle. Then, use the Ziploc bag filled with melted black candy coating and make the pupil in the center.

Voila! You’re done! Place the eyeballs on a black or dark colored platter for maximum ghoulish effect! Have a happy Halloween!
