How to create the sugarveil lace look without the mess and stress of using the liquid lace this super easy tuttorial technique created and published by carina bentley of Carina’s cupcakes takes you start to finish to acheiving the lace look with a lace embossing mat superwhite and fondant.the quickest easiest lace look around
List of Materials
- lightly treated coloured fondant
- a sugarveil/lace embossing mat
- 78mm disc cutter
- Sugarflair Superwhite
- flat edged wide tipped paintbrush
- rolling pin
- rejuvanator
- paint pallet
- cornflour
Roll out your fondant to around 5mm thickness, slightly thicker than normal cut a disc with your disc cutter
Gently rub the surface of your disc with a little cornflour then place face down on the embossing mat. Starting with your finger tips and a good even pressure roll from the base to the top in one even roll to allow the fondant to take the impression of the mat
It is very important that you pull the MAT OFF OF THE FONDANT AND NOT THE FONDANT OFF THE MAT AS THIS WILL DISTURB THE IMPRESSION!!
The disc will be slightly mishapen so use the cutter to tidy the disc up and then place the disc onto your buttercreamed cupcake. position centrally and ease the edges down to meet the sides of the cupcake case
A dd a generous blob of buttercream to the centre of your cupcake ensuring none touches the sides and lay your disc centrally on the blob
Carefully smooth the VERY EDGES of the disc down onto the edges of the case to form a seal.

Once complete your dome will look like this
Mix up a small amount of white alcohol with some of the superwhite to form a smooth but fairly thick paste, your paintbrush should not be WET but should be COATED in the mixture
Now for the HOLD YOUR BREATH bit
start applying the supper white in GENTLE sideways strokes… this bit takes a bit of practice and you will prob SPLODGE a few times before you get it right but small splodges can be covered with decoration so dont panic
Work across the entire surface reloading your brush as needed but ensurig you are not OVERLOADING your brush!
This image shows the angle of the brush when applying
excuse the rough edges on my fondant top i was in a rush as usual
Once fully painted it will look like this
Add some prettyfications to finish (and cover any splodges) I defy a lamens eye to not think this is the REAL thing!! at the end i will expain the final touch to acheive the look
Now Cut a second disc following the steps as described before but this time lay the disc 3/4 on the mat and a qaurter off.

roll all the way down the length of your hand in one even firm roll
again gently peel the mat from the fondant and tidy the disc up using the disc cutter again as previously shown.
Repeat the previous steps with the superwhite until covered
Your dome should now look like this
TIP: WHEN YOU START WITH A RELOADED BRUSH BEGIN IN AN AREA YOU KNOW WILL BE COVERED WITH A DECORATION THEN IF YOUR TOO HEAVY HANDED OR OVERLOADED ITS EASILY HIDDEN
Add your prettyfications and a generous spray of pearl lustre for the perfcet finish
Your final cakes would look like this play around with different amounts of lace covering and try it on bows etc too the easiest technique for lace on cupcakes with a beautiful effect
