Everyone loved this cake for my 9 year olds birthday party. It's a 2 tier cake (6" & 9") - bright buttercream frosting with the dinosaur sculptures and trees made of chocolate wafer/candy melts (Wilton). Inspired by Liv and Kaye Hansen's Whimsical Bakehouse Book. The cake itself was chocolate chip pound cake with chocolate ganache filling (yum!).

This is my favorite cake yet! I was thinking about doing a cake covered in daisies and it's all I had hoped it would be. It took a long time to make the daisies - my sister and I sat at the kitchen table with coffee and rolled fondant for hours!

This is a three layer cake (french vanilla, pistachio, french vanilla) with peppermint buttercream icing and rolled fondant (daisies).

Thanks for looking!

I made this cake for a staff party we attended this weekend. It was a barbeque and really didn't call for a four-tier cake but I couldn't resist the opportunity to make another cake!

I used the MMF recipe I found in the article section of Cake Central - it is soooo easy to make and work with. I will never buy fondant again! The cake was Betty Crocker's Rainbow mix, modified to make it dense and moist (and yummy! lol..). The icing is buttercream and MMF, both flavored with peppermint.

This was actually done for a baby shower at work (lady's second baby hence the 2 in the toppe), but it turned out a bit more whimsical and birthday-like rather than baby shower-ish. The #2 is candy melts and the bow and curlies are fondant. The rest is buttercream.

This is my first try at a whimsical (crooked) cake. I used the article on here and it went pretty well. It's iced all in BC and I almost had a disaster when I put the top layer on the bottom. The bottom layer has brushed embroidery type flowers. I think it would be easier to do this type of cake in fondant but the customer wanted all BC. The little girl it was for loved it so I guess all in all it was a success.

Here is another shot of the cake, a more closeup view (unfortunately, it shows one of the few places where my cornelli lace wasn't *quite* perfect!). Had fun with this cake!

This was my first attempt at a tilted whimsical cake... I adapted the directions from Cake Central but only used 2 layers on each cake. All are Hersheys perfectly chocolate cake and 1 is chocolate hazel nut mousse filling ,1 was cookies & cream filling and the others were whipped cream and strawberries. The flowers, ribbon & 21 were fondant and the topping was stablized whipped cream. This was fun to do.

This is a butter cake filled with raspberry flavor buttercream. Bottom tier is a 14"x4" petal shape, 2nd tier 10"x3" round and the 3rd tier is 6"x4" square. All covered in fondant, flowers and buttons are gum paste, swirls and grass are royal icing. The clothesline cross bars are lollipop sticks and the clothes are 3-D stickers. The top tier is quilted for extra whimsy. This was for my best girlfriend to welcome her little baby Carter to the world

6" stacked on 8", butter cake iced in buttercream. The disc on top is supposed to be a CD with 2 others underneath it. Started this one at 4 AM so I guess it could be worse....

A HUGE thank you to Jelena for the how-to on making the wings on my "Fairy babies"!! I couldn't have thought that one up on my own! First time trying the butterflies fromt the how-to on the site-really simple!! Turned out great-my client is going to flip. I am really happy w/how this turned out..usually I find something not to like, but I am thrilled w/this one. Bottom tier (in green) is a dummy-the pink layers are cake :)

Ok - first time attempting this - thank you for the wonderful article that gave great directions! This cake is for nobody - just trying out the method of tilting cakes. Fondant looks a little iffy b/c I didn't want to waste good fondant on a practice cake - so I used some of my dryed-out extra fondant.

Just got my new WBH book so I decided to try and replicate the Whimsical cake in there. Woah, there's a LOT of colours in this thing!! So this is my first WBH cake, first stacked cake, first big cake, first "public" cake (ie not for family). Hope it tastes good...
WBH coffee-chocolate flavour, with crushed Oreo & whipped cream filling. Surprisingly not overly sweet. I hope the flavour of the cake/filling can combat the taste of the Wilton gel colour which is present in the icing.

My first (and probably only) attempt at a mad hatter cake. 3 layers, 3 flavors with buttercream and covered in fondant. This was for my best friend's mother's 50th birthday party. It was hot as hell, and no one ate the cake. *sigh*

It was my fellow karate black belt's birthday and my sensei asked me to make a cake for him. I was told he had a nickname of monkey boy, so monkeys were requested.

Chocolate cake with cookies & cream filling. Vanilla IMBC with fondant decorations. I thank TamiAZ for the inspiration.

My brother is in Pharmacy school, so I decided to decorate his brithday cake with things related to his life currently.

The perscription bottle is for him being in pharmacy school and the pink elephant for his fun drinking parties with his pharmacy school friends (related it to Dumbo, but have since heard many other references for pink elephants). And I made the cake topsy turvy for the whole on pills and drunk effect.

Cake was chocolate with cookies & cream filling and all decorated in fondant.

My son kept asking for a Batman cake, so I thought I'd try a whimsical cake. It's a mini cake at only 6 1/2 inches tall and iced in BC. The yellow part of the Batman sign on top is MMF, as are the red smashes and the city. I used piping gel to outline all the details.

This cake was a prototype from my daughters 6th birthday, the original idea was to have it covered in retro candy but being a fickel five year old she decided to go in another direction, but I was so into the slanted cake I wanted to see if I could pull it off.

This is my first try at a whimsy cake using the how-to instructions on this site. My sister couldn't decide on a theme, but said she liked yin-yang, smiley faces and Mardi Gras. So this is what I came up with. She lives in Bermuda and it was hot! I hot a problem with it "sweating", especially the blue, but everyone loved it.

My first attempt at a whimsical-tilted cake. I originally planned on making this a 3-tier cake, however I ran out of fondant (oops!) Obviously, it's covered in fondant, with fondant decorations. Next time I'll get the angles cut correctly too! It was a learning experience.

I was asked by my 6 year old cousin to make this for his class. To reinforce their alphabet and spelling they had snacks each day that represented one letter of the alphabet. While "umbrella" would have done just fine for U...he really wanted the joke of the "underwear". This was a white cake with lemon vanilla BC icing.

This was a two tiered white/vanilla cake with buttercream icing and fondant accents. Buttercream and rasberry filled. This was inspired by a cake that was done by Sharon Z - only not done nearly as nicely as hers! After the pics I added a standing "S" to the top (his name was Steve) and a "30" on the bottom tier both made from black fondant. This is the cake I wrote about in the "cake disasters" section.

This was made to match the invites for a girls night out party for one of my friends moving away. Covered in chocolate fondant w/fondant circles. Was a lot of fun to make!! This must be a popular design right now b/c I've seen a few others on here recently.

TFL!

This is a three tiered cake. It was my first attempt at a crooked cake. I made this for my niece's 1st birthday. I put the monkey on the top because my sister always calls her "monkey".
