I copied the color and photo of a little girl's beach birthday party invitation. Thanks to MaddieCakes I got the idea of how to do it with the brown sugar as sand and the fruit strips for the straps. I was happy how it came out. This is my "practice" cake for the real one due on May 6th.

White almond sour cream cake. Made a template from a new pair of size 9 flip flops and then traced onto a 11x15 cake. Used the cake that was left to grind up in the food processor for the sand (mixed with glitter). Shells are chocolate. Straps are a mix of fondant and gum-tex dried in shape over paper towels.

This cake was for a "couples" shower. The couple were to be married on the beach so the hostess wanted a palm tree, marguarita or something. The cake is covered with buttercream; the straps and flowers are fondant. Even though the straps were allowed to dry for 3-4 days ahead of decorating, one broke and I "glued" it together with vanilla which worked OK. The next time I will make the straps thinner. I smoothed the tops of the flip with a textures paper towel which made them look more realistic.

This was a spur of the moment cake for an organization I donate cakes to. July birthdays. Orange Creamsicle cake with orange cream cheese filling, iced in buttercream. I didn't think it was too bad for a first attempt at "water".

Sorry, I forgot to take a picture with the two together. These were made for two girls born a day apart. There Mom's wanted each girl to have their own cake. Can't say that I blame them. The strap was licorice. I tried doing it with MMF but after 3 days it wasn't dry enough. Gotta love this southern humidity, LOL~~

My dd wanted flip flops so I made them with a little extra. I was running out of time so my icing was not very smooth(finished cake about 15 minutes before guests arrived LOL). Hula girl on 6" island(covered with crushed vanilla oreos) on 9" round. Flip flops vanilla cake and island was chocolate.

Chocolate cake with bavarian creme filling. Frosted in buttercream with shark outline piped on. The sides and top have a shark's tooth piped on although it doesn't really look much like a tooth.

I used a 9X13. The base is peanut butter with finely crushed graham crackers pressed into it. Straps are tie-dye fruit roll ups. Polka dots are skittles. The flower was store bought. So I cheated!! I decided to do it a few hours before showing up at the party!!

this was my second cake ever without any classes. once again i had problems with getting the icing on the cake and getting it smooth but i got it as good as i could and quit before i got to mad. if anyone has any advice i would appreciate it. im still playing with making roses and this wasnt a major cake for anyone so i wasnt too concerned but still wanted it to look good. i made the straps out of candy melts and corn syrup.

Here's my version of the flip flops on this site. I loved the idea! One was chocolate and one white cake with strawberry mousse filling. Iced in buttercream with brush embroidery on top, which is hard to see in the picture. They were for a little girl's 10th surprise party and were a big hit. Thanks for looking!

Made this for my daughter's 7th birthday, which was a pool party. Each flip flop was cut from a 9x13" cake - one white one chocolate. I made a template of a flip flop and cut the cakes using the template. I used "fruit by the foot" for the thong and graham cracker crumbs for the sand. Also used some silk flowers I had from a Hawaiian lei. The girls loved it!

Thank you BJ for this wonderful idea. My officce wanted a cake to celebrate our supervisors birthday. I had no idea what to make her until I ran across pictures of flip flops. My supervisor is a HUGE fan of flip flops and loved these cakes. It was a chocolate mayo cake with buttercream icing. The straps are fondant and the sand is brown sugar.

My Sisters birthday is in July so I made her this cute cake. It is all buttercream stars. The top part of the flip flops are large royal icing stars. I also added a lot of sprinkles to make them look more girly. Thanks for looking.

My niece requested strawberry cake with a flip flop theme. This is what resulted! The flip flops are of (store bought) fondant. The rest is BC.

BC frosting, licorice string braided straps, and fruit tootsie roll flowers. I have never used fondant yet and for something so small I didn't want to make a huge batch of mmf so I figured tootsie rolls would work great and they did! I warmed them in the microwave just enough to soften them. Then I rolled them flat and used the flower cutter from the Wilton class 3 kit. I will try something else for the straps next time because I had a lot of trouble with them and they ruined my flat surface on the tops!

This idea came from a little Betty Crocker dessert idea book. I think it turned out really cute! I made it for a silent auction to raise money for a nearby college. The "sand" was made out of brown sugar.
