HI...well, I finally finished my pin cushion cake with your suggestions. I'm just hoping my aunt likes it. The cake was 2 mini bundt pans, and everything else is gumpaste and fondant sculptures. It was a good mini-experience doing the eyelet. I would love to do an eyelet wedding cake one day. Anyway, I had a blast with this one!! Thanks! Ellen
PS---I am also posting it to the galleries under 3-D misc.
That is an awesome cake!! You did a wonderful job. You should be very proud of your work. Wish I could make anything that looked as good..........Congratulations Keep up the great work...........Bunny
aww....just when I found the directions for one to help you with....
Oh well..yours looks soo much better though!..lol
I hope she is pleased!
thanks for your comments on this one. It was easier than it looks, believe me, especially with the 2 mini bundt pans. It just was time consuming, but I so much enjoyed it.
pastry diva....would you mind forwarding the directions anyway? I would like to see another take on it, only if it is not any trouble! Thanks! Ellen
no problem I will post them here. They are NOT my directions, but I've adapted ..er stole them...hehehe..
No really you can find the directions for a "pincushion" mini cake in the book "sweet creations, the art of decorating beautiful cakes" by sylvia weinstock.
The book was a bit dissapointing in it's pictures and instructions, but I hadn't bought anything from her before so now, I have rounded my collection.
She uses a cupcake, so this cake is small, but here are what I would do.
I'd carve the cake down to fit, roll out some red fondant and wrap the fondand around the cake. First I would build up the cake into the segments with crisco buttercream, and with a hot spatula I'd smooth it out and make the indents where the 'seams' would be.
with green fondant, I'd do the little snakes that will fit into the indents and cut the star that goes on top.
The cute thing that I'd do besides the needle that you did, would be to add a few pin holes or hat pins that sylvia has, but they are not edible they are made out of wire and candies. I would NOT use the wire. I'd make very thin sausages of gumpaste, paint them dull siver and add the candies to the top. I think Colete has some instructions on this.
Also, you could make gumpaste or royal icing safety pins and tailor pins and strew them around ...just to add to what you did!
Like I said..your cake is much nicer than the one in the picture in her book...
I agree with SQUIRLEYCAKES, sometimes I wonder HOW people get book deals..lol
well everyone has an "idea" and how to excecute that Idea.
I like yours!..I really do!!
thank you again..... pastry diva.... I appreciate your additions! I also wanted to do the hatpins with pearlized gumpaste, but I settled for the silver dragees pushpins. I unfortunately ran out of time! I've got 4 cakes this week....the pin cushion, a barbie cake, a baby cake, and my fairy tale pumpkin cake for my niece is due. I actually took a personal day to complete them (plus, I needed a mental health day away from the crazy teenagers)
By the way, the molded buttons were from molds I created using the sculpey mold maker and a few old buttons. (the round buttons I just used cutouts). Ok, I better get started...long day ahead!!
Ellen
It looks absolutely fabulous!!!
I saw a pin cushion cake on colette peters website and I thought of you but couldn't remember who asked for ideas. Anyways, yours looks ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!
You did a wonderful job on it!!!! She can't help but love that cake ... it's just great!

Wow, I just got tired reading...and if you're having to take days off from work to complete your cakes..your cakes had better be picking up the slack of the money that you are missing..lol
You put a lot of detail in your cakes, make sure that the money you're getting is worth it.
PS: when you make those "EXTRAS" for your cakes....make extras, keep on hand for the next cake that you may have to do along similar lines...like when you did the buttons....I hope that you made extra so you could use them for other cakes!
That's why I can "put out" a cake in record time..when all I have to do is maybe bake and ice my cakes....coz all my "additions" are readily available.
I make them and store them in clear plastic boxes, so I can easily see what's inside.
When I make colored gumpaste flower, I add more white gumpaste to make the flowers in the PALEST colors..so all I have to do to make them match is a little airbrush or powdered dust color!
and I make crisco airdrying butter cream flowers by the truckload!...those I keep in the boxes too!
Just a heads up so you don't kill yourself making cakes..lol
HTH!!!
Ellepal - I bought some of the sculpey moldmaker but haven't tried it out yet. I take it it works pretty well? I was concerned that I wouldn't get enough detail.
