Hey Guys,

I'm just wondering what everyone does about what I call "egg boogers"-those whitish globs by the egg yolk. My mom taught me to remove them before adding eggs to a recipe. Why, I don't know. Is there a reason to remove them? Who removes the boogers and who just throws the eggs in "as is"?

Me: sometimes I remove them if they come off easy, sometimes I leave them if they fall in with the whites when I'm separating the egg.

Not sure what they are but I don't seperate them. They are white and stay with the whites. I have never heard of removing them before.

I was laughing when I read this!!! Ever since I was a kid I have removed them. My whole family thinks I'm crazy. They are like an umbilical cord to me. This is gross, but when I was a kid I was eating scrambled eggs and one got cought between my front teeth. I was so grossed out about that I have removed them ever since....even if I'm not eating what I'm putting the eggs into.
So my vote goes to REMOVE them.

I leave them in, but they gross me out a little. I don't know what they are, but it is just way too much trouble to remove them.

Since they seem to pretty much break down when beaten, I leave them in when adding egges to recipes. I have been known to pick them out of cooked scrambled eggs, though. icon_smile.gif

it's actually called the chalazae. it's what anchors the yolk in place. the more prominent the chalzae, the fresher the egg.

I was so excited to see this post!!!!!!!! I have always removed them, and yes, my family also makes fun of me. It never fails that each night as I am baking my husband will laugh as I pick them out. It can be very time consuming, but I am like a mad woman when it comes to them!!!!!

they are umbilical cords (i took foods and nutrition class in high school and i remember the teacher telling us that those white slimy things in the white part were umbilical cords. she told us we could remove them or leave them in.) they do look weird, but i leave them in. they never make an appearance after being cooked, and they are too slippery and aggravating to take out, IMO.

the title to this one should have some with a warning, but heck if it had i would most likely read it anyway---oh, i'm sooo very sorry i read this thread, i think i'm going to be sick-no joke, i don't eat eggs & have a hard time cooking with them--the comment about the 'cord' had me almost running to the bathroom---i took a minute before typing & i will now say that if i'm separating the eggs, i always remove it...if i'm just cooking eggs, i don't.........oh my stomach still hurts--yuck---funny how somethings from your childhood stick with you--that's what happened to me

I take them out most of the time, because they are nasty! I cannot bring myself to eat an egg unless it's in something and you can't tell what it is. The whole thought of it just grosses me totally out. When I was little, my grandparents had chickens, and I was about 4 and helping bake cookies with my grandma. I broke the egg into the bowl, and there was a partially formed chick inside of it. I haven't eaten a plain egg since. It's not a sight that is easily forgotten! If I happen to think about an egg being in a cake or cookie, I can't eat it! Don't even get me started on hot dogs! I have a very sensitive stomach!

edited because i meant to say i take them out most of the time, not leave them in.

I am so happy to hear that I am not alone in this obsession of mine! As long as you use a fork, it's pretty easy to remove them.....only takes an extra 3 seconds!

It depends on what I am using it on.If I make Creme Brulee I remove the embrane.Lemon curd and pastry cream too!If I make SMBC I definately remove the membrane---If I do not I notice it gets hard if heated. It gets dragged in the icing and I prefer not to have it there.

Other than that I leave it it in.

ewww...i try to remove them, but those little suckers are slimy. i myself don't eat eggs, unless they are in something that you don't realize it. my daughter has resorted to calling eggs, "liquid chicken", boy the things a 3 year old can come up with. i think she is on the road to not eating eggs either. i'll have to try the fork idea, i've tried with the shell, and end up with bits of shell in the bowl.

Oh I am sooo glad to know that I am not a wierdo and there are people out there who feel like I do. Those things are disgusting. I usually don't bother when cooking with eggs, because they do break down if beaten enough; but when making things like french toast or whatever, out they go.
However, if they do get cooked in and not broken down they are so nasty. A coworker brought in some cookies his girlfriend had made once and when I bit into an egg booger (very appropriate term once they are cooked in); it ruined the entire batch for me and I wouldn't touch another.

Oh, me too!! Definitely NOT a fan of those slimy little things. That kind of stuff grosses me out, so I always do my best to remove them. A little off subject: I'm also not a fan of eating meat off of the bone (so no chicken wings, ribs, or t-bones for me!), and lobster & crab (still in the shell, at least) freaks me out too. Everybody makes fun of me for that, but all their teasing pales in comparison to the grossness of sucking on a bone! Yuck!!

I am also glad to find so many other people who do not eat eggs!! Everytime I tell someone I don't like eggs they look at me like I am crazy.

From time to time my sister helps me with cake if I am really busy. One Friday morning we were mixing cake batter for a bridal tasting that afternoon. She was mixing the chocolate and she does not remove the "egg boogers." The cakes were baked in mini-loaves. When I turned the first one out of the pan, one of them had settled in the bottom and was right on top of the cake!!!!!!!!! UGH!!! I really though I was going to be sick. I threw the whole batch away and had to start over (and barely was ready for the tasting). She thought that I was insane!!!

OH...gross!! I don't eat eggs, either. I had never given much thought to this, though, as you see in my previous post, I just left them in. Now I have way too much information. You can bet I will now remove every one of them. Ugh. I'm also super grossed out by eggs with double yolks. I don't know why, but I just think it is so nasty, and I will throw them away.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I almost wet my pants!

I cracked up laughing with the initial post then when I got to daltonam's comment I couldn't contain it any longer. Have you ever laughed so hard you started coughing and choking...that was hilarious.

Well, I don't like messing with egg whites. If I could get away with it, I wouldn't touch them ever again. They're like SNOT WADS....OR LOOGIES.

I do not remove that thingy. I just try to daze and just make sure I didn't get any yolk in there when seperating them.

ugh.

This post has definitely brightened up my day. It is so interesting to find out about people. I personally don't worry about them. I love eggs and eat them whenever I can. I also don't have a problem eating meat off the bone. Yes, it can remind you of what you are eating but I also think about the early times when that is the only way people survived, was to eat what they killed. Don't know if that makes a difference but it helps me. Of course I do consider myself a carnivor anyway. icon_smile.gif

oh gosh...eating meat off the bone never bothered me...but reading it like that just reminded me of the slime that you gotta clean off when cleaning a deer. ugh.

I don't want to drink milk straight from a cow...I want it from the dairy section in a jug.

I don't want fresh eggs...I want them in the container from the dairy section.

I don't want to slaughter my own cow...I want my meat on styrofoam trays with those soaker pads under it and wrapped in plastic.

I like the idea of farm living until my DH brings up "oh and fresh eggs and milk..." that's when I jump ship.

This is so funny! I've never even noticed them or thought a thing about it! I can't eat a fish if it still has a head and eyes, but that's about it. Now I'm going to think about snot and boogers every time I crack an egg! Thanks a lot guys. HE HE!!
