....but what kind of measuring device does everybody use to measure the crisco with. I scoop the crisco into a measuring cup press it down and then scoop it out into the bowl. There must be something more practical.

I will be anxiously awaiting for an answer, when I receive the answer I'll probably slap my forehead and say " Oh yeah !!"

TIA, Melony

thank you Michelle that is exactly what I was talking about. I knew there had to be something out there.LOL I love it now I have to buy it.

Yay!!!! party.gif

Yes I am probably too over joyed but I just hated using the measuring cup. My personal pet peeve I couldn't stand scarping it out.

sterlingcakes, as far as the crisco sticks they are very convenient but not economical for me as I have to make several batches of frosting a week. If not for that I would still be using them.

thanks to all for your input,
Melony

I use something similar to Michelle's suggestion...it was made by Tupperware and I've had it for years.
I don't know if they still make it, but seems like they do. Janice

I weigh my ingredients... I put a paper plate onto my scale and just plop the shortening right on there. It's a lot easier than packing it into a measuring cup.

You could also use a larger measuring cup (I use a 4-cup) and put in 1 cup of water then put you crisco in it until it rises to 2 cups. Lift out crisco and put in your mixing bowl. The little extra water should not affect the taste.

I learned something the hard way.... I had measured out the shortening in my measuring cup and I didn't clean it out... I just stuck it in the dishwasher. ALL MY DISHES WERE COVERED IN FILM. It was terribly gross.

So then I learned that I have to scrape the measuring cup and wipe it down before putting it in the dishwasher.

I've been trying to find a better way myself.

I'm going to have tolook into the tupperware product.

As for using my eye to measure I don't think my eyes are properly trained just yet. Eventually I'm sure I'll develope that trait...lol.

Weighing the ingredients sounds like a good idea also , but I don't have a scale. On top of that I wouldn't have the space to store it. Ahhh maybe one day a nice big kitchen. ::sigh::

Tickled, that's terrible. I would have screamed out of frustration when I saw that film on my dishes.

Thank you to all for sharing there methods.

I use crisco to make practice frosting, but I stopped measuring after the first couple of batches. Someone else sells the popout measuring cups. Betty Crocker?

Adven68, I could never give up my measuring spoons. I'd get far too carried away with the rum. icon_biggrin.gif

Well, my Wilton teacher told us that the proper method to measure Crisco was to put water in a cup and then scoop the Crisco in until the water measured to amount that we needed in Crisco.

For example, if you need 1 Cup of Crisco, here is what I do:

I have a measuring cup that yields 1 1/2 cups. I fill it with water up to 1/2 cup. Then I spoon the Crisco into the cup until the water rises to 1 1/2. Makes sense? I have to spoon Crisco until 1 1/2 cups, because 1/2 cup of that is water... icon_biggrin.gif So in reality, I have 1 cup of Crisco and 1/2 of cup of water.

I hope I didn't confuse you... icon_redface.gif

For ShelbysYummys and the others who use pamperedchef product. I went on their site but wasn't sure which one of the cups you use. I guess it's the Measure-All® Cup, please confirm. Thanks all.

YES!! The Measure All cup is what it's called. It's the one with the plunger thing. You can measure dry or liquid in it, depending on which way you hold it. Also love their measuring spoons! thumbs_up.gif

Do you do This when baking also? Do you have consistant results or is it hit and miss? When I cook I will chance it at eyeballing but never when I am baking. LOL I go by the motto cooking is an art and baking is a science LOL. Everything must be exact when I am baking icon_biggrin.gif

MariaLovesCakes:

That's a neat little trick. Science actually. It's a practical application of Archimedes principle. For those of you not familiar with it. The story goes that a king wanted a crown made entirely of gold. Once it was made the king was supicious that the goldsmith cheated him but making it out of iron then covering it with gold. So he asked Archimedes to figure out if it was pure gold without destroying it. Archimedes pondered this for days then one day he was in his bathtub. He noticed the lower he sank in to the bath tub the more water he displaced. At this point he realized that gold and iron have different densities and will displace different amounts of water. This supposedly prompted him to run naked in to the streets where he exclaimed his famous quote. Eureka! (I have found it!)

Thanks for the story, princess...those darn Greeks...they're so smart!!! (I happen to be Greek if you haven't already guessed).....

I guess it's a family thing....my mommy icon_rolleyes.gif ...who is arguably the best chef in the entire world (that's like saying there is only one most adorable kid in the world and every mother's got him-or her!)..... never measures anything either. She's so funny when I ask her for a recipe.....I say how much, Ma? and she'll say..."You know...use your eye!"

So...it works for me....I never had any complaints...not to my face anyway....hee hee!

My grandma never measured or followed a written recipe. You learned to cook and to bake by practice, practice and more practice. I took her baking for granted (didn't everyone eat to die for desserts?), but now realize she would be considered a pastry chef. Everything biscuit, cake and pie was perfect. She didn't make us souffles cause we thought they were yucky.

I don't have those kind of skills so I use alcohol to improve upon my works. (hiccup!)

Haha, my mother-in-law was like that. When she baked, I would grab whatever amount of ingredient she was using before she dumped it in the mix, just so I could write down a recipe. Made it harder too, because she didn't speak English. But we had some fun baking together!
I think that after awhile they developed an eye for measurements. Personally, I have never trusted my eye with most things, haha! The amounts would be lopsided, haha!

I love the Crisco sticks, too, but it is so much cheaper to buy the giant can at BJ's.

I also use the Pampered chef measure all cup. I usually wash it by hand and then put it in the dishwasher. I HATE that Crisco film that gets over everything in the dishwasher if there is even the tiniest bit stuck on something.

well I cheat I learned real quick to use my scale. It is so much easier to weigh it than to try and get it in a measuring cup

I also love the Crisco sticks, but quit using them when I realized how much money I was wasting.

I still measure mine out using a big, 2-cup measuring cup, but I may have to check out the Pampered Chef version.

Hey Squirrelly, I agree with you. You can never use too much rum! But I learned one thing the hard way....never use Bacardi 151 when making a rum cake! The cake had to be adults only!
