My aunt is visiting us this week, and I wanted to make her a belated cake. She loves to sew, and I thought it would be fun to make her a tomato pin cushion cake with the sports ball pan and some gumpaste accents. Does anyone have photos or know of anywhere in the gallery where one has been done before? I think she will love this cake!
Thanks in advance!
Ellen
I cant say I have ever seen one.... I even looked on the internet.... I am so sure that your cake will be great that you will have lots of visiting the picture when you make it and post it!
I would do it the same as a pumpkin only with red icing instead of orange. If you use a bundt pan, you can fill in the hole, then roll out some green fondant, cut out the leafy patch and slap it on top. Pipe some green lines with a tip 3 or 4, and don't forget the pin sharpener, which you could do either from a cupcake or just from a ball of fondant.
Thank you all for all of your help! I actually did an image search for "pin cushion cake" on google, and wouldn't you know, but Colette Peters did one!! UGH!! She always takes my ideas!!! HMMPH!!! (just kiddin' ) Anyway, her pin cushion cake is exactly what I had in mind. Alimonkey, thanks for the instructions; that will definitely be useful!
NO WAY!!! YOU DIDN'T JUST HAVE THIS IDEA!!! I thought the same thing not more than an hour ago!!! I was sewing some patches on my DH's uniform and I looked at my tomato pin cushion and thought..."hmmmm, that would be a cool cake!" You have to make it now and show us what it looks like when you're done. How funny!!!!!
Amy
I saw that cake too!! why cute. Be sure to post the pic if you make it!! I'd love to see it
Michelle
wow!! Amy, that is so ironic!! I am going to try for it this week, and see what happens! I just got swamped with two cake orders for Friday, so that makes 3 cakes this week, plus working full time.
If finish it, I will definitely post it!
Ellen
Well, good luck! I hope you don't have to have too many late nights! Looking forward to seeing your pictures!
Amy
Isn't it funny how everything we look at ends up a cake in our minds? I always think, "Now, how would I turn that into a cake?" lol
Oh absolutely! I'm still tossing around the idea of creating a Candy Land themed tiered cake for the cake show in March! We'll see how far I get with that idea.
Amy
oh, now THAT is a great idea!! I think you can get really far with that idea!! You have so much to work with, but I think you'll probably have to start gumpasting alot of little figurines! But how cute...You could tier the cake and your border could be the little multi-color path. You can have each candy "station" along the route with the lollipops and candy canes, and the chocolate globby thing! Anyway.....now you've got me thinkin'!!
I still have designs on doing a Saint Basils Cathedral Cake, but I think I better start small with my tomato pin cushion cake! LOL (It would be pretty, though, wouldn't it??)
Oh, that is very very cool! I just love how bright the cake is! That's what I'm going for. I want to have the multi-colored path to wind all down the tiers, top to bottom. I have so many other ideas that I had better get to drawing out my design. I've never done that before but I think this cake calls for it.
Thanks so much for finding that cake. How very very cool.
Oh and yes, that would be very cool to do that cathedral. What a masterpiece!
Have you decided what pan you're going to use to make the tomato or are you going to use the sports ball pan?
Amy
I can't wait to see your cake!! I think that would be the most awesome birthday cake a kid could get. Please PM me when you've finished...I'd love to see your photos!
It may be a while until I get around to Saint Basil's!! (I've got to acquire some skills before tackling that job!!) The church itself looks like a cake, so at least it has that going for it!!
I think I'm sticking with the sports ball pan because I don't own the mini bundts and I already made and froze the cake. I will ridge the fondant to get it to look like the tomato.
