icon_cry.gif I have been trying to use chalks on a rose and I do not understand how much 80 proof to chalk or dusts.

If there is a book to help me in this problem, I hope that someone out there can lead me in the right way.

I enjoy "CakeCentral" I am always telling anyone and everyone that I get all my help from everyone at CakeCentral.

Chalks and dusts are fairly new to me, but when I took a gumpaste class, we ground non-toxic chalk thru a teastrainer, and I used a fat little make-up brush, and brushed a light pink rose with a darker dusty rose chalk. I was impressed with that! I havent heard about mixing it with alcohol, but like I said Im new to the chalk thing. Now, last night for the first time I used some pearl dust with alcohol, and put them on my candy seashells, that was awesome! Unfortuneately, it was cold this morning, and I had my heat on, and by the time I got to work, I saw they were melted... icon_cry.gif

I started a forum in another section before I read this --- I am wondering if you can use regular non-toxic artist chalks from any craft store. Brenda - it sounds like you did that - do you know if that is O.K. is it really that different then using petal dust? Any suggestions are much welcome as I've been wondering about this for a long time! Thanks,
Danielle

ok, from what I know, those ones are not approved by the FDA which means they are considered non edible.... I am no expert though...

Thanks Charleydog for the reply. What I am noticing is that all the petal dusts say "non-edible" and that they are not FDA approved either... which is making me wonder what really is the difference?

Maybe someone else can respond, because I thought there was some differences in types...did you try to the link I posted earlier in this post?

Sorry I couldn't help more..

Mrsjha - in answer to your question. I read somewhere that you use 1/4 tsp dust to 1/8 tsp alcohol. Hope that helps!

I saw this

#S9 - PASTELS - 24 colors when shaved, alternate for petal dust. $17

I think I remember reading about this in his book, too.

I don't think many people would actually eat the flowers anyway (maybe kids, but not the adults? ) But I'm not sure if it is safe to use to paint on fondant if the fondant is going to be eaten?

Here is a pic of the chalks that I purchased from Earlenes website. They do not say they are FDA approved, but I am not making a meal out of them...just dusting a flower. I use them in the dry form and just brush the colors on the flowers/petals

Those are the ones that I just ordered and received the other day. The colors are beautiful and they go on (dry) very nice. I just use a little paint brush (one for my cake stuff).
