NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Someone explain this before I hyperventilate, PLEASE!
(OK, breathe... ) How could this be? Where can i find a legal resource guide of any kind? Why, Why, Why...that's what I need to know. BOO-HOO
Help anyone, I'll be up all night.
I don't understand - no licensing for what?? Certainly there are bakeries in California....
BTW, where are you located?
Geez. so quick. Ahh yes, sorry about that. Left it out in the midst of panicking He He
I am in the San Fernando Valley. I read about how you cant operate a home cake business in California, period, and wondered WHYYY oh GOD WHYYYYYY!
Thats all
I didn't know that but I have to say I'm not surprised - we have some of the strictest rules in the country for home based businesses, even without the zoning considerations. Whenever I've read about people 'converting their garages/laundry rooms etc' into commercial kitchens I've been amazed - had no idea you could do that. Every state/city/county is so different.
Would you consider a commercial setting?
Nah, no commercial for me. I had my heart set on working from home. Well that gives me a little more incentive to move LOL. It's getting too expensive to live in California now anyway haha
Oh boy...you can say that again. I live in Northern CA and I can't afford to move!!!! I would be making tons of money on the sale of our home...but to purchase another would break our bank!!!!!
As for home cake business...I have been doing the research my self too. I would need to rent a commercial kitchen and get a business license. Even then the red tape is just awful! I HATE that we live in a place that is so expensive and has so many restrictions. In order to start a business here....it's like you need to have a boat load of money...which I don't have...hence why I want to start one. Vicious cycle....sorry about venting!
Please let me know if you find a loop-hole!!!!
Pennsylvania has very easy rules about home baking...basically no pets, no kids in the kitchen during processing, and as long as you are not making things that have to be refrigerated (like milk products, merangue, etc) then you are pretty much exempt from virtually all regulations. I think technically you are supposed to register and check zoning but otherwise it is very easy.
I'm in Northern california as well! I live about 25 minutes North of Sacramento on Beale AFB.
Thankfully, I'll be starting my business OUTSIDE of California. For gosh sakes, you can do so much else in Cali, but run a cake business from your home? Nah. I know that San Diegoans are not even afriad of doing drugs on the street cuz they only get tickets, and I've seen it done.
Ugh, guess it turned into a rant from me too. But I specifically had my husband put in for orders out of Cali ASAP because I'm only working from home, so I can stay at home and watch my kids.

Hello everyone! Thought I'd add something to this. I live in Southern California and myself am looking for a commercial space to rent. The reason for this (which, in my opinion is totally ludicrous) is that California is such a litigious state. Everyone here is worried about someone suing someone over an upset stomach.
My very good friends are getting married next June and I was going to do their cake for them, but the locale will not allow it due to "liability issues". We cannot be certain her cake is a certain temperature, or prepared according to health and safety codes were the reasons they were given.
California has gotten rediculous with these codes. I have not come across anyone who has gotten food poisoning from a cake.
