I was just wondering if those of you who sell your cakes find that you sell mostly decorated sheet cakes, or 3D cakes/character cakes?

I've just started out pretty much and I've found that EVERY cake I've been asked to make as a favor or for sale is a 3-d or character cake.

I just did a Minnie Mouse for a birthday and bear cake for a baby shower and am in the middle of using the Shamrock pan now.

Well, if you follow copyright laws, you cant. You can only sell cakes with things like liscenced edible images or figures. But there are those that still sell them. you can sell cakes made from shaped pans but the liscensed characaters are another story.

Liscensed pans are ones that are characters, like Barbie, Disney, Bob the builder and so on.

I guess I should clarify my question. Do you do mostly sheet cakes or customized/3D/sculpture cakes? Not necessarily talking about licensed characters (though I found that thread very informative, thank you for posting the link briansbaker!!) just ball shapes, bears, anything besides a flat sheet cake.
Thanks!

Sheet cakes are my most requested cake! I think I have only done two different character cakes...Spongebob and Tweety! It works out good for me because I don't really care to do the character cakes to much!

I do sheet cakes. I haven't done a 3-D cake yet but if I did I would sell it for more! More work will go into it. I doubt I'd sell many because it would be higher~ I will stick to sheetcakes & wedding & groom cakes. That deal about copyright is stupid! Like decorators are making millions of dollars on doing character cakes! I've never done one. I like to come up w/ my own ideas. I think character cakes are cute but I also think they take away from your creativity~
