Here is a picture of my first cake from my Wilton course I, I am very proud of how smooth it is but I know I could have filled in the violet a little more. Any advice to help me be better next time? There is a larger pic in my gallery if you want to see more detail.

Thanks icon_smile.gif

Wow very nice.. I can't get my cakes that smooth that is why I usually put lots and lots of detail over the icing.. Like cornelli lace or lots of flowers etc.. You did a great job..

I think it looks super! I have a really hard time getting mine that smooth. Oh, who am I kidding? They're never that smooth. The gel transfer looks good, too. It might need a little perfecting, but that will come with practice.

Good work! thumbs_up.gif

Thanks for the compliments, I know I have a LONG way to go, but I really was impressed at how smooth I was able to get it. icon_smile.gif

Next weeks cake looks fun too, except I don't really like clowns very much!

The instructor taught us how to smooth it after it crusts with a paper towel, but before that I just used the spatula to get it as smooth as possible. The paper towel is what made the difference I think.

Nice work. The cake is really smooth.

I use parchement paper to smooth my icing after it has crusted over.

thanks for all the compliments! I might try the parchment paper for next week, I wonder how well wax paper would work?

Could you all explain the steps you use for doing the paper towel trick. I tried it and it kind of worked. I was a little nervous doing it so I think I held back a little bit. It would just be reassuring to hear it from all you experianced people. Especially with how AMAZINGLY smooth your cake it. I think it's great!
