What do you use to decorate an angel food cake?

I want to make a b-day cake for a friend who says his fave cake is angel food. I would think that buttercream would be too sweet. What do you use on an angel food cake when you have to be able to decorate it?

Thanks for your thoughts.

For angel food cakes i always love and use a mix of half pudding and cool whip. Then add a good splash of amaretto(sp?) liquor. Then fresh fruits like strawberries and blueberries. I always do the natural look where you slap it on ,but f you want to you can make it look clean by layering it and letting the layers show.

Recipe for amaretto cream:

1 large box of vanilla pudding, made as directed
1 regular sized tub of cool whip
a splash or two of amaretto until desired taste

fold the vanilla pudding and cool whip together then add amaretto until desired taste.

It has some alchohol in it since you won't be cooking it ,but its just for taste so i think it'd be ok to serve to kids. If your worried i think they have a amaretto flavoring.

EDIT: The recipe is pretty thin so you might have to experiment to figure out how to make it thick enough if you want to decorate with it. Sorry!

Or you could use a lemon or fruit flavored royal icing to decorate.

You can use a Seven Minute Frosting. It's light and won't crush the cake.

I tried to ice an angelfood cake with fondant once and it actually crushed it a bit...I guess it was tooooo heavy! oops! icon_lol.gif

I've covered an Angel Food Cake with whipped cream before and with a spreadable ganache!! That was tasty, with the ganache. I have a few pictures of Angel Food Cakes in my pics and two of them are covered with ganache. YUMMY!!!!!!!!
