Cake Carousel in Richardson is offering a class called patchwork fancies on November 1 and 2. There is a daytime class and an evening class. So far there is one person signed up for the evening and 1 (me) signed up for the daytime class.

If you are interested in learning more about patchwork cutters this sounds like an interesting class. The cost is $50 for the 2 day class. I think that is a little pricey but I have not even found patchwork cutters anywhere locally much less found instruction on using them.

Thought I would pass this along in case anyone is interested.

Patchwork cutters are great, I use them regularly. As well as patchwork you can use them for decoupage, stand up figures, embossing, painting ect. They're very versatile. I know Nicolas Lodge sells them in the US but you could also try the British Ebay site. This link is also to my favourite cake decorating store and they deliver to the US

What's the difference between a patchwork cutter and a regular, say cookie cutter?

They're a bit thinner than cookie cutters, They've been specially designed for sugarpaste work so the edge may cut while the inner lines may emboss,. When used there is much more detail in these than in cookie cutters, even down to the faces on people. They really are a fantastic medium to work in. The range is great as well if you follow this link then press the button for patchwork cutters it shows the full range.

There is also a series of books available which show how to use and adapt the cutters

I know of a place in Virginia that sells the books and the cutters.

you can go to beryls.com , she has an online catalogue.

That is who introduced me to the patchwork cutters. I aggree with missbaritone, they're great to work with and you can

1. Paint them after you cut them..

2. cut the pattern and then use the cutters to cut different paste and lay on

3. let dry and attach something to make them stand up on the top of cakes!

they even have messages and such..they are super!

TamiAZ....I saw your pictures when you posted them and that is when I got interested in the patchwork design.
I hope that I learn to do them as well as you have.

I had seen MissBaritone's church and asked about it then I saw TamiAZ's flowers and really became interested. One of the local cake supply stores has a few of the cutters and are offering the class.

I picked up a package that had butterflies and bugs. The only problem is that they are pretty small so probably not the best to start out with since I had never used patchwork cutters or gumpaste before. Even so, the butterflies that I have cut out look really cute because it embosses the detail at the same time it cuts out the butterfly shape.

I think they will be really fun when I figure out what to do with them!LOL
