Does anyone have a picket fence pattern I can use to make a royal icing fence for a halloween/fall cake? The client wants a round cake with pumpkins around the bottom and some stacked on the cake with a picket fence in the background like they are piled along the fence.

I figured I could use donut holes for the pumkins and cover them in fondant rather than all fondant. I was going to coat the cake in chocolate BC and make the fence in royal icing.

I looked through the halloween gallery and got some ideas there, but suggestions are welcome!!

Also, I have to make a baptism cake for a friend and I think she's leaning towards a book cake. Anyone try to do it without buying the book pan, like carving a sheet cake?

Thanks!! I love this site!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

I have the pattern from Wilton for the picket fence. If you need that one, just PM me and I will scan and send it to you.

For the book shape.....just bake a sheet cake, and carve out a "V" shape from the center. You might also want to trim a little off the two ends, to give it a little slant.

mrwarnke Thanks for the patterns! The last one is close to what I wanted.

MrsMissey Is the wilton pattern in one of the course books? I haven't to look back in my course book 2 when we did the color flow. Thanks for the thoughts on the book cake. Do you think its better to try shaving it when its cold or frozen or room temp? I think probably just cold from the fridge so it will be firm but not solid.

Yes, it is the one from the Wilton course book.

I would at least partially freeze the cake before trying to carve...a lot less crumbs!

If it doesn't have to be perfect, you can just draw one yourself. Look in my pictures at the John Deere cake. I used the basketweave tip and just drew little sections on waxed paper. That way I could make it as big as I needed. HTH! icon_smile.gif

Ok, I pulled out my ol' faithful lasagna pan and measured it. It is nearly the same size as the book pan but not as deep. I know I could probably add more than 2 cake mixes to it to make the cake rise more. Do you think this would be sufficient for 30-35 people?

Thanks for the advice!

Okay, it's not royal icing but pastillage, however this link to Martha Stewart has directions on how to make the fence:

I did a graveyard cake last halloween I made the fence out of royal icing and I used a basketweave tip and free-handed the sections of fence. It gave the cake a more authentic look then perfectly mafe fence. I dont know what your design is so that might not go. However, I have the pic of the cake. If you want me To post it let me know. I will have to resize it.
