I posted about making a snare drum for a groom's cake several days ago, I included a picture.
The wedding is getting closer..Oct.29th. Here is what I thought I would do. Since the drum is very colorful. I am going to make the cake and ice with buttercreme. I want to wrap the sides in fondant and paint it to look like the drum using luster dust. I am making the silver bars and other decorations to attach out of fondant also.
I guess what I really need to know is how I should attach all of this to the cake.
I think that I have it worked out in my head, but you know how that goes sometimes icon_rolleyes.gif
Any and all advice is welcome.

Any fondant to go directly on the cake such as the sides, stick on with a thin layer of buttercream. Any fondant to stick on to other fondant , either use a little water or mix some left over fondant with water so you get a piping consistency and use that to stick the bits on

How thick should the fondant be that I am going to wrap around the cake?

Sherryb it can be as thick or thin as you need to achieve the look you need.... Just remeber that there is such a thing as too heavy and it could fall off .....but with this design i dont see it being a problem ....

I guess the only thing else I would suggest is maybe put a trim around the top and bottom out of the same fondant as the silver bars and attach the bars to the trim so that they stand out from the sides of the cake. Do you see what I mean? The bars don't touch the sides of the drum. Everything else you have planned sounds great. I can't wait to see the pics.

I wouldn't go any thinner than 1/4", otherwise it might tear while you are trying to put it on the cake! Can't wait to see this finished! Good luck!
