I just opened up my Tupperware flour canister and found a tiny wheat bug in there! icon_surprised.gif After digging around, I also found larva too! OMG! That's so gross! I thought Tuppperware was guaranteed to keep bugs out! My sister says that they got in before I bought it or while it was on my shelf.

Has anyone had this problem? How can I prevent this? I only buy the expensive flour (King Arthur) and now I have to throw it all away. icon_cry.gif

Not that I'm Tupperwear lover, but don't hate it---I bet it was in there before you even bought it. That's what I've always heard about bugs like that, that they can nest in there and last a while....YUCK! thumbsdown.gif

Don't have a solution, but that happened to a DH mix I was about to use. As I was pouring it into my mixer I saw two little bugs in the bottom of the bag. I almost had a heart attack. I had to throw it out, wash the mixer, and start over. I always check the bags before pouring now. I think sometimes these things just happen.

ARG!!! Makes me want to go check my Kind Arthur Flour right now!!!!

Hope it doesn't happen again.... they probably were there already.

Right now I am combatting fruit flies. ARG A few came home with me on some bananas I am sure of it... and now we just can't get rid of them.

That is gross, my MIL always puts her extra flour and cornmeal and such in the refrig, she says this will prevent the bugs from getting in the bags. I don't know, but it's worth a try just to keep from having to throw it outicon_smile.gif

Hello-

Something that I learned from my grandmother (as a child) for any type of grain, flour etc. "Bay Leaves" could be the solution. If you have flour, sugar, jiffy mix or anyting grain like in a cabinet or cupboard ..she always said to have bay leaves around. For instance, in my cabinets, around spices, sugar or anything, I place bay leaves in the corners of each shelf.

For canisters, I wrap a bay leaf or 2 in wax paper and place it in the canister with the product. It doesn't leave a smell or taste. I have NEVER seen a bug in any of my grain products. It must work.

This is my suggestion. At this point, it's worth a try.

Good Luck

Great! Other than my immediate family, I never heard anyone use Bay Leaves, so I just always "assumed" they worked. I also thought it was just a southern thing in Alabama (where grams is from) and we all know "If grandma said it... it must be right!" LOL icon_lol.gif

I sell tupperware ....and they told us that as a selling point to point out that they are bug proof! And they told about weebles they are little critters that come in the flour ......tupperware is good because once you put your flour in the container you can burp it, seal it and leave it until the next day....your supposed to check the container because if indeed any critters did hitch a ride from the store or processing plant they will have come up for air!! It gross I know, I had never heard of this until I started selling this product. So far I ve had my Modularmates for 5 years and never had anything get in. In fact I was just telling DH that I needed more comtainers....a year and a half ago we bought an older home that was vacant for a while, good thing that i never had to worry about my containers.
Hope this helps......

I keep everything i have opend in the fridge. Thats the only safe place. I wish all my kicthen cupboards would close and open like a fridge. I hate these bugs. I also call a war for those tiny little red ants. You can't even see them but if one crumble stays on the floor overnight they come from nowhere...
So even if i finish my cake 3 o'clock in the morning i have to wash the floor. icon_cry.gif

Bay leaves are the trick. My mother taught me that years and years ago.
However, sometimes after coming home from buying flour from the store, it already has bugs in it so I have to go and return it. What causes these?

I have had bullweavels in cornmeal several times. It gets in the cornmeal & flour at the stores or at the place it was processed. Everytime I make cornbread (& being from Louisiana I make it a lot) I check all through it! I baked some cornbread one time & didn't check. The bullweavels were all at the top of my baked cornbread!! Talk about nasty!!

Now when I get new cornmeal & flour I pour it out of the bags into freezer ziploc bags or tupperware. I freeze my flour but I put the cornmeal in the cabinet. If they don't have weavels in it then they won't have any period.

Don't get me started w/ sugar ants & fire ants!! They are horrible here!!!!!!! I swear those things have more lives then cats!!!

Hate to sound like a smart butt, but these bugs are called boll weevils, I think. When I was little my cousin refused to eat her cereal because, as she said, "its got weasels in it". That became the family joke that stands to this day when anyone finds any bugs in their dry goods. It used to be more common in the old days, I think. I keep my flour and bread flour in five gal. pickle buckets with tight lids and cornmeal in the freezer. If you ever find any of these bugs in anything you will most likely find them in your other dry goods. A person would be surprised what bugs we eat and never know it. I watched a show on tv that told how much stuff could legally be packaged as far as bugs, dirt, etc. Makes you want to grow everything yourself and only eat things you can peel yourself so you nothing is inside. LOL

boll weevil (webster dictionary)

NOUN:

A small, grayish, long-snouted beetle (Anthonomus grandis) of Mexico and the southern United States, having adults that puncture cotton buds and larvae that hatch in and damage cotton bolls.
Informal A conservative white Southern Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Have a great day.

those wheat bugs or whatever they are called are completely disturbing to me. We've had issues with them also & everytime I find them I'm horrified for days. More than once, I've gone so far as to throw out everything that was opened or not in plastic bags or sealable containers, after I've found 1 in something.

I will definitely have to try the bay leaf suggestion. I don't have any of the little bugs right now knock on wood, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get rid of them once I find them except by throwing everything out. It's kind of scarey to think we buy things that are infested with the bugs unknowingly & bring them into our homes. YUCK!!

Thanks tcturtleshell for the ziplock bag suggestions! I'm gonna try that AND the bayleaves, I've never heard of it, but hey if it works...go with it! I've been putting my extra bags of flour in the freezer in a ziplock (not dumped out, just in the paper bag it comes in). My open bags I keep in the pantry inside a gallon size ziplock. I haven't had any "wormy bugs" in my flour yet, but I occasionally get them in Jiffy mix. I've heard the bugs or larvae are usually on the wheat, corn, etc when it's harvested and goes through processing. If this is true, I just always assumed the ones that make it through all that eventually hatch and there ya go. Sounds yummy huh! Well, thanks again for the suggestions. I'm just a newbie here, but I absolutely LOVE this site!! I made my boss a cake for boss's day today and got the idea of the golf cake from this site!!!

Happy Baking! icon_biggrin.gif
