I think I ruined my wilton pans in the dishwasher and was wondering if this happened to anyone else.

When I took them out of the dishwasher last night they had what looked like a white film on them. I thought it was the dishwasher liquid that didn't get completley rinsed off, so I washed them by hand in hot soapy water and the white film didn't come off. My husband even tried scrubbing them a second time and it still didn't come off. He said the outer protective layer may have come off in the dishwasher!!

Has this happened to anyone else?? I'm afraid to use them now and will probably just replace them. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif Bad part is I ruined my set of 6", 8", and 10" pans (2 pans each)!!!! The ones I use the most!! And I will need to replace them w/in the next week b/c of orders I have!!! I'm so upset!! thumbsdown.gif

Will def. not replace w/wilton though!

I have one like that. It came in a set of pans that I bought off of ebay. It still works wonderfully, just looks terrible.

Make a practice cake with the smaller pans just to prove to yourself that it is not completely ruined. You will see, they still work just as well.

Hope this helps!!

pinkbunny... I had the exact same thing happen. I too think it is something in the dishwashing soap that affects the metal. DO NOT throw them away. I have continued to use my pans with no problems whatsoever. It does not affect the baking.

My local cake shop lady told me this week NEVER to put a Wilton pan in the dishwasher. The metal in the pans interacts with the dish soap and gunks the pans up. Funny how Wilton doesn't mention that on their pan inserts!!!

pinkbunny,

Your pans are not ruined...just look somewhat bad. icon_cry.gif

I buy pans from the Thrift Store all the time with the discoloration and they work fine.

my wilton pan inserts did tell me not to put in dishwasher because it would change the look of the pan. I forgot and still put in the diswasher. It still works great

well. glad to hear they will still work. it's funny though...this was not the first time they were put in the dishwasher. icon_confused.gif wasn't looking forward to spending all that money to get new pans!!

guess i'll read the inserts more closely next time!!!

Have you changed your dishwasher soap ? I changed soap recently and suddenly my everyday cutlery that I have used and washed for years looked tarnished and the finish was messed up. Went back to my original soap and the rest of my cutlery was fine ! Sometimes a bargain price is not a bargain worth changing brands for !!!

Fortunately I was told from the very beginning not to wash my pans in the dishwasher, and it has been brought up over and over again in these forums, but it still happens! Janice

I use one of my Wilton pan and fill with water and put my cheesecake springform pan inside of the Wilton pan and several use, my Wilton pan started having a white film around entire pan. It is still useable though. I am beginning to wonder if it is the water, cause sometimes your water can be hard depending where u live. My water is hard and I can tell, cause when I wash my face and dry it, I end up with a white ashy film on my face, so I put lotion when ever it calls for it. The white film is even around the outside of my sprinform pan. Don't get rid of your pans continue to use them cause pans can be expensive. Hope this information helped a little. icon_smile.gif

HA! I have one for you.. My DH used my pan(because he doesnt ask before he uses or else I would have told him H@LL NO! icon_evil.gif ) on the grill top rack to keep corn on the cob warm.. icon_mad.gif Grrrrrrrr.. Now I have I pretty pan on the inside and the out side is horrible. I hate that sometimes people want to see the size of the pans I have. I show them all but that one. I simply say I have an 11x15, but someone is using it right now. (sigh) tapedshut.gif

I never wash any of my pans in the dishwasher for that same reason. And it does state on the label not to put them in the dishwasher. That has to be a bummer because those pans are not cheap. Good Luck.

Specifically what Wilton pans are y'all talking about?

I put ALL of my Wilton pans in the dishwasher and none have ever had any kind of residual white film (my primary goal in life is never to handwash dishes icon_biggrin.gif). Some of my pans are 8 years old.

None are non-stick, of course. Those should never see the inside of a dishwasher.

me nither...except when I used cascade the 1st week because thats what they gave me at the store for free....so I switched to jet dry and electrsol...its worked good for me so far.

but I did have some pans that were messed up from the non stick spray so I read that cold oven cleaner would work and that stripped my pan I was freaking out when as I washed i saw the metal powder up and wash off...if that make sense

I always put my pans in the dishwasher and they are all Wilton. I am a firm believer that even though it says not to put it in the dishwasher, most of the time you still can. My pans do have a slight white look to them but it has never affected the outcome of my cakes. I switched to Cascade Complete detergent recently and that seems to have cut down on that film (and it cleans everything else beautifully!). So don't throw your pans out! They will still work just the same!

Anodized pans will be discolored if placed in the dishwasher. I do believe the inserts on the Wilton pans say it's best Tto hand wash with warm soapy water or something to that efffect because of that fact..

If you know me I love experimenting. So I put my pan in the dishwasher to see if it would be discolored. It has not happened yet so they continue to go in the dishwasher. LOL... Then i Will consider hand washing
