Is there anything I can add to melted chocolate chips (crisco or corn syrup or something?) to use them as a candy coating? I don't want them to be as hard as a chocolate chip when it firms back up. Unfortunately, chocolate chips are ALL I have. The few bags of chocolate candy melts at the only store to get them are old and taste stale and that's not my idea of yummy candy. I can however get fresh(er) chocolate chips. If there is anything I can add so they stay a little soft, what and how much? Thanks for any help!

If you add just a little something, it should be a fat -shortening or oil.
It will also thin the chips to make dipping a little easier.

Corn syrup is water and "a bit" will cause the chocolate to sieze.

I normally add a little butter to chips when I melt them. Even without anything, the chips will not firm up as hard as they are in their original state.

I know it has been a while since you asked about adding something to the chocolate. I have been making candy since learning from my mom as a small child. The only ONLY thing she (or I) have ever added is 1 block of Gulf Wax per 12ounces of chips (you don't have to be exact on the measurements...it is very forgiving. You will get a nice shine on your finished product! HTH Good luck!
