After a failed FBCT attempt earlier in the week, I tried again tonight. (I think it was too thin the first time). I was trying it for the actual cake tonight (earlier was just a practice) and I did pretty well, I think! This cake was for a friend's husband who just returned from Iraq. I started to write Welcome Home on the ribbon but did an awful job, so I took off the writing icing and added some yellow to cover up that area. I'm not sure if you can see that in the picture or not but, after I took the picture, I added a little more yellow & also smoothed it out more.

Considering I did most of the decorating with one hand and a baby on the hip (who kept grabbing at everything), I don't think I did too badly for my first cake! The cake itself was a double-chocolate and all the icing is my buttercream.

Great Job!

Remember, babies grow up fast. So consider the times of decorating with one on your hip as a blessing.

My 20 year old used to "help" me. Now he just calls from college and says, "Mom, send cake!!"

You did a great job!! icon_biggrin.gif I know what you mean about trying to do things with a baby on your hip! It's hard....all the checks that I write looks like a first grader wrote them because baby girl keeps trying to grab the pen away from me. icon_lol.gif

Great Cake!! Hugs......~Denise

Thanks everyone! I delivered it Thursday night and they loved it! Friday my friend showed the cake (what was left of it, anyway!) to another friend and she called me to order one!! That will be my first paid cake!! She had priced a similar cake at a local bakery and they wanted $50. I wanted to charge her $30 but she insiisted on $40...I won't argue! LOL

I wouldn't argue either! You have make sure that you charge enough to make it worth your time. I don't think $40 was too much.

Good Luck with your cakes!
