Ok...so this isn't end of the world or anything BUT..... I've been baking non-stop for the last two days. (well, actually.... non-stop in between taking care of the kiddies and the husband and the cats, etc...)

Anyhow....I'm doing a wedding cake for a good friend this Saturday. Five tiers....ten cakes. Plus.....hubby asked me to do a birthday cake for someone he works with who had a piece of my cake at a party. Nice guy...glad to do it for him. OK..... 2 more cakes. So now I'm at 12 cakes (various flavors, of course). Oh wait.... I picked up a Michael's coupon from a friend yesterday (craft store for any who haven't heard of it).... and she pleaded with me.... "if you have any extra cake".... etc. OF COURSE!!! what's two more cakes?!? Fourteen cakes (or is it 40... I can't friggen count anymore). Oh wait again... here comes hubby.....home from working a long day standing outside for a parade (he's a cop). "Iif you have any extra cake... maybe you could me me some cupcakes", he says. NO PROBLEM!!!

SO... back to the beginning (and actually the point of the whole story haha)... I've been baking my butt off (oh I wish that would literally happen) for two days now. It's midnite and I'm FINALLY finishing the cupcakes and the last 6 inch cake for my friend (the one with the coupon). Cupcakes come out fine. Six incher taking a little more time....finally finishes. I take it out.... put the rack on the pan.....flip it.....take the pan off.....pick up the rack and the cake to move to a different counter, and my cake flew off the rack like a bat out of hell and disappeared. Apparently as I was spraying my pans with PAM over and over..... I got some on this cooling rack. Well.... the cake flew about 8 feet across my kitchen, over the counter, and into the living room. Not bad.... maybe it's a new record or something.

So... here I am... it's 12:30am and I was able to scrape enough cake batter up to make another 6 incher.

One eyeball is barely open .... but I'm gonna finish these cakes tonite if it kills me, by golly.

Oh I wish I could have seen the cake fly. icon_smile.gif Some people say the hardest part is the decorating but I think it's the baking and mixing icing. Good for you for finally getting it done (and for getting so many orders). Good luck on your cakes!

jsmith... I totally agree with you! The hard part is the baking & mixing of icing (well that part takes the longest time)!! If I could just decorate I'd be sooo happy & wouldn't have near as many disasters happen~ icon_smile.gif

Baking and mixing is one big pain in the rear end! If only I could buy a magic wand on ebay and just get right to the decorating part! icon_biggrin.gif

PS--They don't sell magic wands on ebay, do they? icon_confused.gif Maybe I should check....

Oh you poor thing. But you sure gave me a chuckle sharing the story. I say the best thing to do with those situations is to share and laugh, or you will cry. Good luck and look forward to seeing all your wonderful work.

Wow and funny story! A couple of weeks ago I had to bake 16 cake and 124 cookies. I told myself after I got all finished that I would not do that again. That was for a 3 tiered wedding cake(12",10", 8") grooms cake(6-7" square cakes) and the rest for a baby shower.
I started early but next time I think I would need to start earlier. I would have died if I would have had a flying cake!!!

Thanx for all the words of encouragment. Finally got finished and cleaned up at about 2 am last nite.

When I was pregnant with my first son, I thought I would have SOOOooo much more time to dedicate to making cakes (and all those unfinished projects I had started over the years) - knowing I would be quitting my job and staying home. Two boys later, and I STILL stay up until 2 or 3 am when I have a cake to do. Maybe it's a time management problem hahahahaha (she says with a delirious laugh).....

Ahhhh well.... it's all worth it in the end. icon_biggrin.gif

yeah it is worth it!
i agree with the baking and mixing icing part. i had about sixty cake this week at the bakery i work at along with a ginormous cake in the shape of an anchor for a sorority at the college here (seriously, i used like 5 11x15 cakes) PLUS our only other decorator left, ARG. january is usually so slow, but for some reason we are crazy busy. i though i was going to get a break after christmas. oh well, i still do love my job!

I'll bet they do sell them --- but you better check the seller's rating VERY carefully and make sure they give a money back guarantee!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Suttle, great job getting all those cakes done!! You must be one very kind soul to make someone a cake for giving you a Michael's coupon though!

Did a search for magic wands on ebay. Call me curious. (Yes, I know what it did to the cat. icon_confused.gif ) Yup, they're there. 435 of them! icon_eek.gif Found a crystal ball too--charged with positive energy. I'll take some of that! icon_biggrin.gif

If it's a time management problem, then I've got it, too. I can manage to bake while the boys are underfoot but when it comes to icing / decorating, that happens after everyone's asleep and inevitably I'm up way past midnight doing it. It's just not worth it trying to do it when the boys are around (too many little fingers reaching for the icing!)

I can only work on cakes in the evenings after my little one (mischievous devil) goes to sleep. If I'm done before midnight, it's a bona fide miracle. If there were an award for "Slowest Decorator on Earth", it would be mine. icon_rolleyes.gif

I don't like working when my kids are awake either. Pint sized people never reap pint sized messes. Why is that?

And you're not slow--you're a "meticulously detail oriented perfectionist". icon_wink.gif That's what I try to tell myself anyway!

i must add here i am mom to five.. ages 1-15 and when i worked full time OUTSIDE the house i never had a date book... now i cant live without one! I too had lots of baking this weekend..... 100 cookies, one two tiered cake and one 8" square. i usually budget my time pretty well... i budget for many interruptions HOWEVER, my 18 month old ecided she would become extremely mischevious... she broke TWO fondant cake toppers (for the two cakes) and then another handcarved mickey mouse cookie... AND THEN stuck her fingers into one of the finished cakes covered in fondant (Tiffany style). AAAAHHHHHH! I almost cried. then i realized.. she's probably trying to mimick me! anyway... i will be purchasing baby gats to lock myself in the kitchen for this weekend. I have a 4-tiered totem pole cake!

So it turns out that I'm not the only one who's been thinking that huh? I am so like that about everything I enjoy doing. When I sew, I want the pattern/design to pina nd cut itself, not to mention mark itself @ all the correct tailor measurements so that I can start sewing right now by gollie!!
Anywho, I too so totally dread the 'baking' portion of cake decorating-love the taste, hate the work.

LOL, Kellie! I just love you all here at CC. We all seem to have so many things in common. I'm mom to 8 and just had DH buy me a PDA. Now that I have it, I've been trying to figure out how I did without that and a cell phone(where I kept most of my life until the pda) in the '90s. Good Job, Kellie. It'll all pay off in the long run, there's such satisfaction in what we do.
