Ok, I got my 1st wedding cake order......great news...but there's always bad!! I posted awhile back about donating bday cakes to Katrina evacuees in my area.....well most shelters couldn't take them b/c I wasn't licensed. But guess my name got passed around and a church housing some evacuees got my name. thumbs_up.gif

They wanted to know if I could donate a wedding cake. I said sure (I've been dying to a wedding cake) We talked for a few mintues about they wanted..colors..style...etc. Well I finally ask how many people does it need to feed....she says ~100 icon_eek.gif OM!!! But that isn't even the worst part...then I ask what day...Sat. Oct 15th....the same night I'm hosting a party at my house for one of my friends!! thumbsdown.gif And I'm doing the cake for that party. They said they don't care what I do....they are just grateful I'm willing to do it. So I'm not worried about making the cake.

They haven't picked a wedding time yet, but finally getting to my question....can I just deliver the cake...set it up and then leave or is that unprofessional? Am I suppose to stay for some reason?? I'm hoping I could just deliver the cake in the afternoon and leave so I could still have time to get ready for my party.

Thanks,
Christine

No! You don't have to stay. Most cakes are delivered and set up hours before the wedding.( Unless of course, you are hired to cut the cake as well, which is an extra charge.) I hope your generosity helps your name get out there. this will be costly, i wonder if the church could help with some of the ingredients, afterall, you are still donating your time and talent. But good for you! Post a pic for us to see! By the way, if they want you to cut the cake, tell them you have a prior commitment and simply cannot.

Hey, if its FREE, they should take it whenever you need to deliver it. I've taken cakes to the hall at 10am when they weren't due to arrive until 5pm. You'll be fine to do that especially if you explain that you have other plans. Good luck! Can't wait to see it! thumbs_up.gif

I think that's a very nice thing you are doing for this couple!! God will bless you for it!!

Don't worry about staying for the wedding. Just set it up & leave. That's what I do. The first wedding I stayed for was for our neighbor's nephew. We were invited.

I would talk to someone who is a member of the church & who will be there for the wedding. That way that person can collect your things so that you'll get them back.

I also leave a wedding card for the bride & groom wishing them Good Luck. With my name & # on it. That way they can thank you & also spread the word for your cakes!

That's my advice~ Your a very kind person for doing this. Kudo's for you!!! Blessings as well~

ok, i am wondering one small detail..is this cake for Katrina people..how do they have 100 people in town to come to the wedding? I don't mean to be skeptical, just curious. Maybe this cake is for a chuch member??? and turlteshell is right, isn't there a saying that what you give will return to you ten-fold.

oh..i like turtleshell's idea of leaving a card..our wedding photographer did that for us, and so did the caterer.

What a nice thing to do, good for you! Likely the church members make up the 100 people.
Yes, you just set it up and leave.

That is very kind of you to do that. It will also give you some experience in doing wedding cakes. I have always set up a few hours before the reception and then leave. You should have plenty of time to get ready for your party.

Hi,
I think you are doing a great thing! And you will get some great experience doing a wedding cake!!! I would just LOVE that opportunity!!
I would like to bring up a question and hopefully it won't come across as selfish. But could you deduct the cost of the ingredients on your income taxes like you would if you made were making an actual cash donation to a charity?

I hope I don't sound selfish by wondering this, because it is a good deed you are doing! icon_smile.gif

Wanted to update about my donated wedding cake. I was SO nervous about this cake b/c not only was it my 1st wedding cake....I found out the wedding was going to be covered by our local paper!!! A lot of businesses in the area are donating their services. Good exposure I know, but for my 1st cake for 150 people and only 2 wks notice!!!! I was freaking out!!! icon_eek.gificon_cry.gificon_eek.gificon_cry.gif

Well, I called one of the ladys from my local cake club to get advice about what sizes I need, suggestions, etc. Our next meeting was that week and suggested we could discuss it at the meeting b/c she has cake stands galore and other stuff I could use. Well, the other girls in the club were so excited about helping.....we made it a cake club event!!!

Everyone in the club is donating something....so the only thing I'm actually left doing is the 6" round, the fillings, and the decorating!!!! Two of the other girls are going to do the grooms cake. I'm so happy I have experienced help!!! And I still get to do my favorite part.....the design and decorations for the cake!!! They are being great about everything. The wedding got moved up a day to the 14th, so I can actually stay now, so there is even going to be girls to help me deliver, set up, cut, and take down. I feel so much more relaxed now and grateful for their help. I'm excited about doing the cake now!!! thumbs_up.gif

Just thought I'd share!
Thanks

We need more Pink Bunny's in the world today. It makes me proud to hear of success stories like this one.

Congratulations and you will be blessed 3 times over for doing such a good deed to those that are thankful, but less fortunate due to this tragedy.
