I have two cakes due Saturday at noon, so last night I baked one and got that out of the way and decided I was going to bake the other one today after I got home from my weekly breakfast meeting with my friend.

So this morning, I get home at 9:45 and turn the oven on to preheat and began to mix my cake. I poured the batter in the pans and stick them in a preheated oven and set my timer for 40 minutes and go along my merry way. Timer goes off and I check my cakes, not done. Set the timer again. Again, not done. Boy this cake sure is taking its time! Set the timer AGAIN and AGAIN, and AGAIN! Finally, the cake barely bounces back, so I take it out of the overn, let it rest for 10 minutes and turn it over. Oh no! The midlle of the cakes have holes in them, not deep enough for me to bake again, they can be salvaged. Anyway, I looked at my oven to turn it off and what do I see? The oven was set to 225 not 325! I guess to be sure the cake is completely done, I'll be baking again after I go get the kids from school.

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, DUMB!

I did that once. With a turkey. On Thanksgiving. It was my first one and I was still in highschool. Thankfully it was just me and my mom. icon_biggrin.gif

Well, I'm thinking that because I'm not being paid for this particular cake (my present to the little guy) and it is mostly for kids, I may just forego baking another cake and just filling the holes in with frosting. They aren't that deep, that's why I said they are salvagable. I just won't torte the cake.

Hey Debsuewoo,

Don't Feel Bad!!!! lmaoooooooo You should see what I did today,, lmao,, I have to keep laughing cause that makes me feel better.. I put my first 9x13 in the oven and was on the last 3 minutes of baking and thought hmmmmmmmmmm..... I am forgetting....... Chocolate Chips.. ugghhhh.. so 1st one on the table,, then I do the 2nd one and throw the chips in the mixer, I usually wait and just sprinkle them across the top so they settle into the cake, well nooooooooo I had to Mix them all up in there,, I didnt forget this time.. hahaha.. I flip the cake out, and there are plenty of Chocolate Chips on the Bottom, which of course will be the TOP icon_lol.gifthumbs_up.gif and they seem to have comformed their own type of Chocolate Chew,, haha. that wasnt all I threw them Into the Mixer for the 3rd cake.. hahaha. but at least this time I didnt put As many in.. So now I have a soccer ball cake and a round in the oven baking so that I can see if I can Mess those up tonight too.. hahaha.. I think they will be fine though there is just something about Devils Food Cake with Chocolate Chips. Talk about a Double Zoom Zoom Effect..
& better yet Now EVERYONE in the house Smells like CAKE.. Yummmmmmm...haha..

Tooo funny!!! I'm rolling in laughter!!! I've done the same thing! For cakes, turkey, casseroles etc.. WE women are mulit-tasked but sometimes we run out of arms, hands, eyes, & MINDS to handle everything!! LOL!! Salvage it, like you said it's for kids! They'll never know~

I can feel everyone's pain.

I once had 3...count 'em...3 11x15 chocolate cakes to fall in the center for one cake order. icon_cry.gif

Was so totally upset that I didn't even take a picture of the one that finally came out...didn't want any rememberance of it at all...sure went in the whole on that cake big time.

Chrystal -OMG that's funny!

SweetCreations-I started using the mini choc chips in my choc chip cakes (besides stirring in a little flour before mixing them in) and haven't had a problem since! The mini ones don't weigh as much (obviously) icon_biggrin.gif so they don't sink as bad!

Ali, that is a terrific suggestion for the mini chips. I recently had a disaster type cake where all the chips went directly to the bottom (I had put in way too many) and there was a gooey, greasy mess on the bottom...it did eventually make some pretty good cake balls! Janice

Oh yeah, about the mini chips - I've never used them in my devil's food cake. The batter's so thin I'm POSITIVE it wouldn't even support the mini ones. If I ever try it, I will try sprinkling them on top and see what happens. Another thing I like about them though is that they distribute the chocolate more evenly.
