I'm making some cupcakes with a small amount of various size dragees in gold and black sprinkled on top. I know they tend to be very hard and I don't want anyone to break a tooth so I was thinking about making them out of fondant ahead of time, letting them dry out and then airbrushing them. I'd also make teeny ones out of plain nonpareils airbrushed. I know this will be a bit time consuming but worth it if they're easier to consume.

My question is if anyone has done this before, how did it come out? Were you happy with the results? Do you have any photos to share?

I've searched the internet but didn't come up with much aside from how to color regular dragees.

Thanks!

I roll my own.  I have several silicone pearl strand molds from First Impression.  I make a length of pearls, cut them apart, and then round them out in my hand.

For silver I use grey fondant and for gold I use yellow fondant.  I roll them in a tiny bit of edible, FDA approve luster dust mixed with some lemon extract.  I place them in a bowl with the "paint" and roll them around vigorously.  I let them dry on a flat weave paper towel like Viva.

All of the tiny, shiny balls you see on this cake were made this way.

Maybenot, Impressive. Both of you are very creative. I used dragees once, found out the silver & gold ones were not meant to eat, even though they are sold as edible. I also found out how hard they were so I just quit using them. Very creative both of you! I really love this site! I learn so much. I'm just a home baker that enjoys it, have no desire to ruin the fun & do it for a living, lol. Good luck!
