Hi, I'm new to the site and not a very experienced cake decorator and need some advice.  I have an idea for a square tall cake (using several individual cakes stacked) and I want to decorate each of the four sides with a different scene.  So I thought I could roll out some fondant to the required size, paint on the scene/image and then let it dry.  Then a few days later when the cake is prepared and crumb coated I would attach each panel using butter cream.  Has anyone else ever done this and is it possible as I've described it or is there another better way?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can measure the size, cut a piece of fondant, better modeling fondant since you want it to be dry and stiff, paint it and attach it with BC to the sides.

Make sure you get everything cut precisely or it'll look odd.

But can I ask you: A tiered cake? You say you are not very experienced... Are you sure you can pull that off? Have you done that before?

I would use gumpaste instead of fondant if you want it to dry hard

Thanks for the advice Julia1812 and Naivohw.  I have made a stacked rainbow cake and decorated it to look like a top hat which turned out well (see pics, let me know what you think) but I had a couple of issues along the way so I thought I would get some advice before starting my new challenge.

Thanks again.

AWow, that looks very nice! As Imemagee said, you can use gum paste too, but it would need to be removed from the cake before cutting /eating. I made a bottle cake the other day and made the panels for the box out of gum paste (see in my pics). That needs to be done some days in advance as the panels need time to dry. It also means, you have to be quiet sure about the sizes!!! So, decide on the cake pan you are using. Measure the inside with of both sides if not squared. Add the thickness of your icing and fondant (f.e. 1/2 inch) double and add to your cake pan measurement. Then decide on the hight. Normally cakes are 4", but you said "very tall", so not sure what you'll choose. If you gum paste is 1/8" thick, add that to the width of both panels with are parallel to each other to have some overlapping on the corners.

Then, when baking and icing the cake, make sure you measure exactly! You can always add or take off some icing... Attaching panels is a bit of a pain and can look quiet wired if they don't fit perfectly.

I used gum paste as they had to be higher than the box, otherwise I would have decided on modeling fondant I guess. If that doesn't fit you can always cut a piece off without risking to break it
