You can always mix some of your food coloring with a little vodka and use a paint brush. Otherwise just purchase some food markers online :)

I would dilute with vodka, yes. As a substitute, I would use corn syrup and/ or simple syrup (boiled water/sugar mix).

PS> Nothing will work as easily as the food markers. :(  A small brush is just a pain, but workable.

can you use piping gel?

You can dilute gel colour with water, no problem, it will just take a little longer to dry. If the colour is already fairly liquid straight from the bottle, you might not need to dilute it. Practice first on a rolled out piece of scrap fondant though!

AYou can mix food colouring with lemon juice or lemon extract. That works very well.

Syrup (boiled sugar) works well for me. I often use this before; when I wasn't into the cake business yet. ^Mixing food colouring with lemon juice sounds good too.

AThe reason I use vodka is this: Food coloring gel is thick and takes long to dry. If you paint on gum paste f.e. it might soften and ruin the gum paste before it's dry. Vodka thins it down (you need less = less money spent on colors) and the vodka evaporates very fast. Faster than it takes to soften gum paste. You can use any clear alcohol, but vodka is very cheap! Now that being said I know you can't use it. I just wanted to explain you why everyone says vodka, vodka, lol! Be careful using water or juice (for above reason). I would probably rather paint with gel alone (details) than with water. What helps speed up the drying process is to place the painted it's in the oven with only the oven light on. Or try color the fondant while you make it (if it's homemade).

Can you use extracts, like lemon extract?  Lemon extract works well too for painting.

Read the lemon extract bottle carefully, it usually contains alcohol.
