AI'm bringing cupcakes into work tomorrow, but the problem is I tried a recipe I've never made before and I do not like them. Plus I don't have enough flour to make a different one and wouldn't have enough to get more and bake and frost before I have to be at work.
Take 'em anyway. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean other people won't like them.
I just made up a new recipe of banana cake and peanut butter mousse found on this site. I LOVED both. My friend LOVED both. My niece gagged just at the description because I mentioned cream cheese, peanut butter and bananas as part of the description. Obviously, people have different tastes.
Oh...and by the way....when you take them in tomorrow---KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT. Do NOT announce to every single person on the stairs, by the coffee pot, in the elevator and at neighboring offices that "this is a new recipe and I hate them and they are yucky and poo and horrible and awful and I didn't have enough flour and couldn't run to the store and....and.....and....and....."
When someone makes a comment on your cupcakes, say:
Thank you. I hope you enjoy the cupcakes. This is a new recipe.
(That's all. No extra words.)
Here on CC we understand and get it. You are allowed to vent here. However, regular (other) people don't care. (Especially if the cupcakes are free.)
Post tomorrow and let us know how it went!
AApti is right. Don't talk them down. We understand you never want to serve something you're not proud of, but most people are just excited to eat cupcakes! Tell everyone you're trying a new recipe and then ask them if you should put them on your roster. They will give you some interesting feedback and they won't blame your ability if they don't like it they will know it's the recipe. No harm no foul!
I took baked goods, candies, cookies, pies, cakes, etc. to work for ages while I was learning. I simply said that I was trying something new, "help yourself". When someone spoke to me about them I didn't ask "do you like them?"
I asked fact seeking open ended questions designed to give me accurate feedback such as"
"Did you try one?" What did you think?" "What did you like best?" "What would you want different in that recipe?" "Would you try that again?"
"Is there another flavor that would be better in the recipe?" anything to gets a full sentence and leads to gaining information about my mad experiments. But there are some things that I hate, that I make for others who love it. That's life.
We all have different taste buds. And believe me there is no accounting for taste in some people. You will know your workmates better than us here and whether or not you can foist the cupcakes off on them. Some people may think they are wonderful
Just got home from work. And even though I wanted to just throw all the cupcakes away, i took them in to work. To my surprise, pretty much all of the feedback I got was good. I even had someone want me to make some cupcakes for her sister's birthday.
AHey congrats! It probably helped you put a yummy frosting on them, right? No more throwing away baked goods!
So what kind of cupcakes were they? Just wondering since everyone else seemed to like them.
Some of the best compliments I have gotten are from "Crap" I wanted to throw at the wall (I mean away). Glad it worked out!
Lol one time I made a cake with olive oil because i didn't have butter/other oil on hand. the batter tasted like olive oil! my brother said so, cousin, etc. i hated it! but can't waste all that batter... baked it anyways, and it tasted just fine, no hint of olive oil. so there you go, things aren't always how they seem in the end! as my mom would always tell me, "mess it up, dress it up" :)
