I'm pretty new to CakeCentral, so I hope this isn't a silly question.  I'm making a 9" round layer cake after work today for a Halloween party and didn't have time to get an early start yesterday.  I'm going to frost it with a fluffy buttercream.  I'm a hobby baker, so even when I've made cakes for showers or any special occasion, I've always kept it on the simple side.  I always prepare what I'm capable of decorating neatly instead of trying something hard and letting it look sloppy.  If I do anything fancy, I certainly need more time than I'll have tonight.  I'd say by the time the cake cools and is frosted and set a bit, I may have an hour to decorate, if I'm lucky.

Here is the idea I currently have:  I'm not going to color my buttercream (leaving it whitish) other than to add some colored beads at the base of the cake.  I will cover the cake with a smooth look, rather than texturing the frosting. In the center of the top of the cake, I plan to use black sugar crystals to make a bat, or maybe some other design, using a stencil.  In a circle, around the border of the top of the cake, I'll add some Halloween sprinkles in orange, black, purple and maybe green.  Then, at the very base of the cake, I'll pipe some big frosting beads in the same colors as the sprinkles.

I'm posting to see if anyone thinks I should stick with my idea or do you have any other ideas for something to do in a short amount of time?  If you have pics, please share!  My cake will be the main desert tonight, as the only other sweets will likely be ice cream and maybe store bought cookies, so I'd like for it to look as good as possible.  Thanks!!

AWell, I hate last minute changes and it seems you already have a plan. So, it might be best to stick to it. But since you asked...very simple in only an hour I would carve the cake in pumpkin shape, frost with orange buttercream as smooth as possible, add a green stem (fondant if you have, otherwise bc), black triangle eyes and zigzag mouth (fondant or bc). P.s. I don't find your question silly at all!

You can do that in an hour?? Carving a cake would take me all night. Impressive, I know. LOL

OP< a black bat sounds great. Don't stress yourself (unless you can carve a pumpkin cake, then go for it!).I'm a big fan of sanding sugar, myself.

Thank you both replying; feeling better about the original plan now.  Also, realized there are some finishing touches to do with costumes so there is no point overwhelming myself!

ellavanilla, I'm thinking the same thing about carving a cake in an hour!  I tried to help someone assemble a "house" cake one time (with no time crunch) and it totally fell apart.

Maybe carving a pumpkin would be worth learning to do since it can also work for Thanksgiving, but it would involve lots of practice for me =)

AYou could do a laying down pumpkin, no carving involved! If you have a round cake of course. Use some green BC or fondant to make the stem and put the black "face" on it. But the bat idea is adorable too!
