AFriday night I had a cake order that I thought was gonna to be simple. I even told everyone that it was an easy design, and that I should be finished early. I was wrong!

It started off great. Even though my son snuck in the kitchen during a pee break and took a bite out of one of my 9in rounds that were cooling. I had an extra one so it was fine.

Fondant came out great, even the black. Covered the bottom tier with no trouble. All that was left was to cover the top 6in tier with white, and that's when disaster hit.

I had it frosted and ready to cover. I put it in the freezer to chill for a minute. That's when my bf got home from work with a box of chicken. I stopped to eat cause I was starving. When I was done eating I pulled out the cake and covered it. Here's where things turned bad.

It started to bubble. I spent 20min trying to fix it but it looked terrible. I had to scrap the white fondant cause it was on red velvet and I could see pink on it.

I made a new batch of fondant, refrosted it, and covered it again. This time I was able to stack it, and was adding the face. That's when I saw it was bubbling AGAIN on the back. I tried to poke a hole to let them air out. As I was trying to rub out the air all the frosting was oozing down, the fondant was sagging, and I was about in tears.

Now it's 1am. I carefully cut the face of and set it aside. I removed the tier and scrapped the fondant again. I couldn't believe how wet the frosting was. I scraped it all off and added more sugar to it. That's when I noticed the cake felt way too cold, and it hit me. While I was eating, my cake froze solid.

Now it's 2am and I have the cake sitting in front of a fan so it can thaw. I refrosted and left it in front of the fan to crust. I made another batch of fondant and waited as long as I could to cover it again.

This time it worked. I stacked it, added the face I saved, and a few more details. 5am, and I was finally done. Lesson learned the very hard way!

If you read all this ty, I didn't plan for it to be so long.

well you really rose to the occasion that unfortunately befell you...twice -- oh my your achin' back!  i'm so so sorry you had to make two more batches of fondant -- eeghads i woulda woke up my husband and made him go get me some fondant -- but good on you for having enough ingredients!

omg just think of the additional stress if you didn't -- i've certainly been there in the middle of the night -- which is how i learned to overbuy when i'm dong a cake --

and the cake could not be cuter -- shows no ill effects from the ordeal you went through -- cute as  a button -- well done!

you deserve a break today :-D

ATy, and yes my shoulders are sore today. I was also grateful that I bought an extra bag of sugar and marshmallows. I ended up leaving daddy in charge of the 3yr old and took a 6hr nap. Lol

Well done, I can't see where you had any issues at all. It's (not) funny that some hard things turn out easy and some easy things turn out oh so annoying!

ACute cake! You mentioned your cake was red velvet? Was your frosting creamcheese frosting? I never had luck using creamcheese under fondant, even the crusting one. So sticky and soft :( so i only use it as a filling and dam and ice my cake with SMBC, no blow outs :) even when the cake is frozen! I only have condensation issues, but it dries after a few hours..
