Hi everyone,

No cakes yet this week. I am making one tomorrow for a family dinner. Nothing too crazy but I never waste a chance to play!

We started Fall Baseball tonight...on the first day that it actually felt like Fall in Northern California. We've had over 100 degree days for weeks and today was a high of 76. NICE! Unfortunately it's not supposed to hold and we'll be back in the 90's next week. SIGH.

Hope everyone is doing well tonight!

Baby shower cake 12" White with raspberry filling, buttercream, Wilton Fondant. Used The MAT to roll out and apply fondant. What a fabulous invention!

I have two different orders: 1) TMNT cake and 23 cupcakes with toppers and 2) gluten free chocolate cake with salted caramel filling and chocolate buttercream.

I have the 1st order done and am working on the 2nd.  Annnnnd it's humid.  again. I live in Arizona and can handle heat - heck, I can handle HOT.  Humid?  Not so much.  It makes everything soooooo sticky!

AMy first cake since my mother died: tomorrow evening, we're having a retirement party for one of the few paid staff members at the Printing Museum. Farewell Gary by Tracker-Backer, on Flickr

Gary's name is upside down, wrong-reading, and enclosed in an odd contraption because that's what type looks like in a composing stick. For reference, see this picture from the Wikimedia Commons, by Willi Heidelbach (click for larger version):

Lacking a jar of black food coloring, I took a risk (and cheated) by buying a tube of black "writing gel" at the local grocer. I hope it doesn't slump beyond legibility over the course of the next 22 hours.

Matty!! I'm a Disney Freak so, of course, I adore your cake!

Dukeswalker...that sounds like quite a lot of work! Please put up photos when you are done? And, yes, Humid is so much worse than hot!

James...wonderful job with the upside down and backwards! That's a trick all in itself. Hope it holds to the party!

See ya'll in the morning!

We've had a busy week at work so that means lots of deco for me. I still have a few to work on tomorrow.

We 3 box troll cakes this weekend, although 2 were for the same order and I think they were all business related.

For what ever reason we had 2 henna cakes.

Love this one even tho it took a while. Also Marcia Cross happened to be standing at the counter when I brought it out for a picture ans she said to me "that's awesome", so that was pretty damn cool.

Also, while not from this week, I had to share this awesome screen capture of Tom Selleck with my Tom Selleck cake on the talk.

Great cakes guys.  I especially like your box troll megpi.  I have not seen one of those before.  Is it hand painted on?

Sorry to hear about your Mum, James.  I missed that one.  Might have been whilst I was away.  Cake fixes most things, but not that sort of pain.

Have not had time to do much since I returned but made these bickies this last week.  Took them up the hill to the kids and when I turned the corner, in the car, the cake plate flipped over and they all stuck together?  Damn!

Apple and Owl cookies

Used GeminiRJs cookie glaze and loved working with it and also think it tastes heaps better than royal icing.  Talk about a sugar hit, though.  I think I rolled the bickies too thin and the icing was about twice as thick as the bickies.  Sent a couple of people at work into diabetic comas.

Never got around to sharing this one before I went on holidays.  It was chocolate ganache with shades of green ganache rough cast on.  The butterflies were sugarveil.  It was a farewell cake for a girl that I trained at work.

So far, so good. Anybody involved in letterpress, flexographic, or intaglio printing will tell you that it's much easier to read something that's wrong-reading if you read it upside down.

Which is why, for the gathering after the memorial service, I'll be baking 2 double batches of shortbreads, and probably 4 9x13 sheets of gingerbread. (And I think I solved the transport problem on the gingerbread: I found some 9x13 foil pans with domed vacuformed plastic lids [to deal with the sticky-as-non-crusting-BC top crust] at Dollar Tree, and like my covered Nordic Ware 9x13, it will just fit inside a 2 1/2 gallon zip-top bag [to keep any vermin out].) Oh, and Re: that test-batch of gingerbread, the last piece was still good a full week later, with no refrigeration at all, tasting like it had just been baked.

Good Morning everyone! As usual, it's wonderful to come back in here Saturday morning and see all of the great cakes!

Meg: All of your cakes are beautiful (are the Box Trolls really that big??) but the Henna ones are knocking me off of my feet! SO beautiful!

Shell!!! WOW! To have your cake spotlighted on such a big "stage" is amazing!!! And your Doc McStuffins cake....I know a whole lotta people who would be just SOOOO happy if that was their party cake! Wonderful work!

Cazza: I'm in awe of people who can do cookies...just not something that I've been able to do past very simple designs. Your owls are adorable!

Cara: The wedding cake is lovely but you are right...wish I could see those flowers better! Maybe the Bride will be able to get you a better photo for your files?

Well, it's Saturday morning so that means I'm at karate with my 13 year old. He's training for his Black Belt for the next 3 months so that means we are up and out of the door before 8am every Saturday from now till Dec 12. UGH. Hope you all have a very nice weekend!

Wow, Megpi - from a Tom Selleck fan.... that is awesome! Also like the stained glass cake, very neat look.

Cat - I'm so sorry about the up & out by 8am on Saturday... I just finished 8 wk run of that and am so thankful for this 1st lazy morning in a while!  my last posting a wk or 2 ago you asked about the waves around my whale themed baby shower cake (sorry I hadn't been back to answer) - yes, that was a Wilton mold of sea shapes.

A bit morbid in my opinion, but maybe that's because my 50th isn't too far away!  Apparently the birthday boy took it well.  1/2 sheet, buttercream iced, covered in crushed Oreo cookies. Fondant covered foam board tombstone, fondant feet, gum paste roses.

Oh my, Autumnwind! Yeah...a bit morbid indeed! Is the tombstone fondant? I have one coming up for a H'ween party and haven't decided what I'm doing about the tombstone. I do love the toes!!!

As for our early rising...yeah...originally I was told it would be Friday nights so it was ok...but now it's Saturday mornings! UGH. So I take my laptop, sign into their wifi and usually edit photos for 2 hours. I have more than enough from the work trips I took this summer to last me for awhile. LOL. I don't mind the rising early (tho' would prefer sleeping till 8:30) but it's the whole process of getting dressed and being presentable at such an early hour! LOL! I know, I know...those who have "real" jobs do it all the time...I'm a spoiled artist. LOL!

But we are back now and off to go see a car show!!! I'm such a geek when it comes to classic cars.

ALovely cakes everyone! I only had one this week...the lady who I ended up making it for paid her deposit but never the other half. Strange really. Anyway it wasn't all bad I donated to a little guy who plays little league with my nephews

Anyway, this is my cake this week, "Andy's Wild Adventures" from CBeebies on BBC was the theme. Changed it to "Ella's Birthday Adventures", lol.

Morgan, love the Super Hero cake! My guys would LOVE that (yes, even the 50'something one would!LOL!)

Julia, LOVE your hippo! SO cute! We don't have that show over here but I'm sure the little one was very pleased with the name change! As for the time zone...yup..I'm on Pacific Time and London is an 8 hours later for us. So it's 1pm here, 9pm for you. That means when I start posting at around 8pm on Friday night for me it's 4am for you! I wouldn't expect you to be awake then! LOL! But it's really just me getting the ball rolling...sometimes it keeps rolling all the way into the next week!

@cazza1  Love the cookies! Your little owls are designed so adorable with the wet-on-wet for the feathers.  Well Done.  I love @GeminiRJ 's icing, and agree with you whole heartedly.

Your cake is very realistic in colors.  Lace butterflies look tremendous (and difficult!)

The tombstone is 1/2" thick foam board covered in fondant, used royal icing to glue it to the board and buttercream to glue it to the cake. Very light.

Thanks, MB, I appreciate that! I thought they looked right / old.  But I have to be honest .... the words are the Wilton italic letter imprints, I imprinted while fondant was soft then painted over with gel color later. And that's how I realized that set doesn't have numbers! Guess I'd never had need for them before. So I hand painted on the numbers.

Zombie princess cake this week, playing with the new wonder mold pan:

Zombie princess! Who says the mound pan is only for pretty princesses?

This was mostly made by my mom, she especially enjoyed zombie-fying the princess with an x-acto knife and halloween face paint. I think we are going to make another trial run for halloween with some fancier piping, and then we will be making one for a halloween party.

That's the only picture I have from this week, but work was crazy the last couple days. I did 11 cake orders today, plus I had to take time out to make caramel apples for a store event. More cakes to do tomorrow, but mostly just DecoPac toy kit cakes, thank god. Nice and simple.
