A I have someone who wants this cake done in buttercreamwith just the decorations in fondant. I have never done this before so I don't know if it's possible. I use swiss meringue buttercream, can I put fondant decorations directly on top of it?

Yes. Should not be a problem at all.

It's ok, so long as you've managed the customers expectations that the cake just won't look the same with butter cream as it will with a fondant finish.
