I am doing something I never done before. Two large cakes on one weekend. My grand-nephew is born the day before my son's birthday.

My son's cake is based off Jules Verne novel, Around the world in 80 days.  Would love more ideas for his cake. Simpler is better since he's 15 and "I don't want you to go all out." was my mission from him. I thought since we are watching the movie two layer square cake with the skylines of London, Paris, San Francisco, and other cities named in the book.

My nephew's theme is Thomas the Tank Engine. I am doing cupcakes and a large RKT of Thomas covered in Blue chocolate. I was wondering how to estimate the amount of chocolate to buy online. As the Wilton blue candy melts are too light and I am not sure my local cake shop carries any blue there either.

you can darken it -- specially made candy color has no water in it -- or you could use powdered color -- and just go with your local store --

how big are you making it?

i think for your son's cake -- i would use an airbrush or different color icings and do sky and clouds (flat surface though) everywhere except for a large circular area in the middle of the top-- to give a nod to the 'world' --

i'd put the skylines and buildings, elephant, train, air balloon etc. around the bottom border in black/chocolate -- silhouettes right -- and along the bottom of the sky line write 1, 3, 4 etc up to 20 on one side 21-40, 41-60 and 61-80 on each side as the days all add up-- i'd write "around the world" above the skylines on each side -- do scroll work and inscription on top-- i'd serve it on a turntable --

this theme reminds me of steam punk so you could do some gears and clocks and weirdy little steam punk-y type adornments -- easy peasy ones --

if you wanted to get a little carried away-- do a little air balloon for the top with the hb banner trailing off from the basket --

at the "15" day mark make it bigger and maybe write "around 15" instead of "around the world" idk--just doing some brainstorming for you -- or cross out the "the world" part of  "around the world" and write 15 -- idk --

maybe something in there will spark an idea for you

Sorry it took so long to answer. I am still not sure of full dimensions but the base is 11 by 7 and the layers I am adding before carving are about 1 inch tall. I decided to use candy clay like fondant for Thomas with a base coat of candy melts.
