Just wondering other people's thoughts on grammar when it comes to cake decorating...please keep in mind that I am a teacher so I may be a bit of a grammar police. ;)
Anyway, I was recently looking at the Facebook page of a cookie decorator (has a store and sells cookies). They had "Happy Mothers Day" written on cookies even though Mothers should be Mother's. Someone else pointed it out and the person who owns the store said she knows there's an apostrophe but chooses not to include it as it takes away from the decor and look of the cookies.
I was also looking at someone's cakes (kind of a friend who worked at a bakery and now just does it as a hobby) and her writing was sloppy and she had misspelled a word and had the N backwards. It was a cute cake however the mistake and sloppy writing took away from the cuteness of the cake (in my opinion anyways).
What are your thoughts on grammar? Do you include apostrophes and such when they should be there? Or do you omit because it may take away from the look of the cake?
I know it's unpopular, but I'd actually rather it be Mothers' Day.
But in general, yes, punctuation should be included correctly. As you say, the 'look' of the cake is worse when there's a glaring error on it.
Grammatically correct, although I think The Hymnal 1982 might have either another exclamation point, or a comma, or maybe even a semicolon, where I have a period.
It's also sloppy, and an obvious extreme rush job, but then again, it's just a family Easter cake, intentionally small because my dad's birthday was only 4 days later.
Incidentally, I completely agree with "mcaulir" about the apostrophe in Mother's Day, and with all due respect, I think Anna Jarvis was being a complete yutz on that one point. Nonetheless, I did put it in the conventional place on my own Mother's Day cake this year:
And "RedneckRuffle," I sincerely hope your spelling error was intentional.
Not sure how an apostrophe takes away from the appearance of a cookie…
Grammar matters. We are losing a lot of grammatical skills, tho, due 2 texting…LOL

HA! Your funny! I love you're posts. Their always fun to reed.
AJust remember (as John Irving so succinctly put it): gradual school is where people go, and they gradually learn that they don't want to go to school any more.
(And "RedneckRuffle," since we're talking about grammatical errors, it's "you're funny" in this usage, not "your funny.")

Hopefully, that's not the only error you caught in that sentence.
AI hate all of the "text slang" on all of the sites now. Would us not wud and tho is not though. It makes us as a society look like idiots!
AAs a customer I wouldn't buy it without the apostrophe. If I really wanted it I'd ask to have it added.
Then again I'm still grousing about my daughter's principle mixing up less and fewer in her 5th grade promotion address last week.
AActually in cookies I wouldn't mind the missing apostrophe. Even though I totally agree that grammar is being sorely neglected these days. In a cake it should be included, but cookies being smaller, having less space, but then again it also depends on the word...
Another correction, it is Mother's not Mothers', a day belonging to mothers as there is not an S on mothers when implying a day belonging to them.
AI think it's generally accepted to be "Mother's" but that implies one mother. Mothers plural, all mothers would actually be "Mothers' " And to be really pedantic, is it a day for mothers or belonging to mothers? An apostrophe should only be used anywhere if it belongs to mothers. If it's only for mothers it should be "mothers".

Poor grammar and spelling definitely bother me too, but mistakes do happen to the best of us. Anyone see the Cake Boss episode where they made a huge bowling alley cake and the N was backwards in the word LANES for the name of the alley, which was front and center and large? I kept saying, how did they miss that, and why doesn't someone point it out?
AI'm not sure that excellent spelling, grammar and attention to detail are skills possessed by ANYONE in a Cake Boss episode!

The rule is that the apostrophe goes after the person/people to whom the day belongs. So if your view is that the day belongs to one mother, it would be Mother's Day. If the day belongs to all the mothers, it should be Mothers' Day.
i err on the side of successful communication-- i also err quite a bit on grammar, punctuation and spelling too plus i not only really really like to make up pithy words -- i love to 'enhance' pronunciation--for example 'tortilla' some say tortEEyah-- how boring -- it's tortillEa
i don't care if i write perfectly-- i do my best-- i proof my posts at least twice if not more --
and by the confusion in this thread alone re: "Mother's Mothers Mothers' Motherz Day of or belonging to 24 hours of the Mom" -- phfft -- we'd have to appoint a committee to determine the accuracy of wth we wanna say or a comitea to dtermen the acure assy or...and then we might not agree--
so i just wanna talk cake mostly and communik8 as best i can--
but i tell yah some of the funniest moments on this board were with some high larious typos--that's even funnier than hilarious-- i can almost laugh out loud just thinking about it...
and fwiw --not that i think anyone is doing this on this thread --
but as of this post there have been 27 different threads posted on today-- the other 23 on the first page are from y.e.s.t.e.r.d.a.y. time was on this board that the whole damned first page could fold right into page two or three if you blinked--
again i don't think anyone on this thread is doing this -- i think we are laughing at ourselves or in some cases groaning at ourselves ;) but people wearing underwear way too tight really did damage with correcting other people's spelling and grammar not to mention making fun of people in general--
so let's not let this go that way-- let's do that on the gramma rand spell ling ling board somewhere far phar aweigh
fun with words is fun
let's just have fun
