Hi everyone!

No cake this week. We are going out to dinner for Father's Day so my hubby wants to get dessert there. We also had a graduation this week but we also had dessert at the restaurant....I'm seeing a theme here! LOL! It's all ok. I have double events this upcoming week so I've been very busy with the details for that this week and that will continue into next week. Also, my other job as a travel photographer has kept me busy editing photos from this past weekends trip to Monterey. So I'm not missing the lack of cake this week.  The odd thing for me is that they are choosing to do cookies for the event next weekend (after wedding family bbq party) so while I'm doing a lot of organizational work I feel strange that I'm not cooking something for this event! Feels odd! LOL!

Tonight is the last night of our Little League TOC's (championship) so we are headed out soon to help close those up. I was our son's team mom this year for his Juniors team (he's 13) so I have a bit to do with the planning committee so there is a bit of tidying up to be done for the last day. I'll be back here right after to see what is going on here!

AI made mini hamburger cupcakes for the cake stall at my kids sports day. They disappeared in seconds!! I was a bit chuffed because I don't sell my cakes and it was nice to see they were well received.

As I said on the Aussie thread, cake and hamburgers are two of my most favorite things in the world so they are like a little heaven.

I am posting a picture of my endless bougainvillia to prove that I really did do them.  Doesn't look like much when they are all together like this, but they took me sooo long.  And even though they are relatively thin, they do not have that paper lucent transparecy that the real ones have, but that is just tooo bad.Bougainvillia

Very pretty Cazza! I've seen wine colored and creme colored petals here in California but I love the purple! And, no...we can never truly get that real texture of a flower which is frustrating. I found that with my hydrangeas but I'm the only one who noticed!  I have to do a peony soon and I know that's going to frustrate me to death so I feel your pain! Can't wait to see the final cake!

AMy own 52nd birthday cake. A bit of a rush-job at the end: I'd planned on baking it yesterday, and decorating it this evening, but about 10 PM last night, I realized that I didn't have the mix, or enough eggs.

Edible printing, of course, on a DH spice cake, with maple-cinnamon BC.

What could be more appropriate for my 52nd birthday, than "52-pickup." And I'm still playing with a full deck.

I was taken a bit off-guard by how completely the edible print filled the pan. Naked ends, of course, for my father's benefit.

ANadiaa those are the cutest cupcakes are the insides just frosting? Having a spur of the moment family reunion next weekend and I may try those if I have time.

Cazza those flowers are beautiful and a lot of tedious work.

James that is a good idea for 52 birthday. Happy birthday!

m & m's anyone? I did this for my great niece. I didn't get to do the m & m's until yesterday.

I still need more practice and to slow down and be patience. I really enjoy coming here on Friday's even if it is just to lurk.

AHappy Birthday James!!!

Marian, the 'meat' is chocolate cake and the 'mustard', 'ketchup' and 'lettuce' are piped buttercream. Your M&M cake is so cute! Love it!

ACara, you've been very busy! I have a soft spot for vintage cupcakes, your bunting ones are adorable.

I'll have another photo tomorrow. I have white chocolate mud cake in the oven right now that I'm filling with raspberry SMBC for my best friend's birthday tomorrow. I'm covering it in vanilla bean SMBC then fondant. My problem is I can't decide between fondant ruffles or a quilted pattern and a bow. I'm leaning towards ruffles, but how long do they need to stay in place? I'm leaving it till the last minute (cos yanno, I love the stress 8O ) so I'll mix the fondant with some gumpaste and am hoping I can get them to sit up and stay ruffled in time!

James, my son loves the DH spice cake and it's now becoming a regular cake to make. I made a brown sugar cinnamon buttercream for it and it's an awesome pairing. I may try your maple cinnamon sometime. :D

I love coming here and seeing everyone's cakes, such an wonderful variety!

Chocolate cake with buttercream, all decorations are buttercream. 14" base, 10" double tier, 6" top tier. Lego bride & groom topper.

Awesome cakes, everyone! And the bougainvillea are beautiful.

14" base, 10" double tier, 6" top. Chocolate cake, buttercream filling, covering & decoration.  Then it traveled 3 hours to the venue.  I think the crack visible on the right is where I cut the 14" in half to be able to move / fill it; just too large for handling for me.

Have a great Father's Day

Done!  I even got an hour of sleep!  Finished icing the groom's cake as we were starting to load the car.

Here's an iPhone picture;  hubby spent the entire time I was finishing the details taking pictures with his good camera (he's an accomplished amateur photographer), so I can't wait to see those!

Those fondant/gumpaste ruffles were a bear!!  I started with the 16", and finally got my stride about 2 strips into the 12"!  Thank goodness I had gotten my KA pasta roller back from my daughter- don't think I could have done it otherwise.  As it is, I spent about six hours frilling and pasting.

I have the utmost respect for you professionals that do this routinely!  My two wedding cakes for family this spring have truly convinced me that this is NOT something I want to do full time!!  I appreciate all the support and education you share so I can create gifts of love.

Uh, let me get this straight: you're not a professional, and don't do this full-time? I never would have guessed that, from the pictures.

You've just given some plausibility to an element of a novel I've been working on, off-and-on (mostly "off," lately), for almost 2 decades: it seems that my protagonist (a child prodigy organist), when she gets married (to a trumpeter), gets a wedding cake baked by family members, in the church kitchen, rather than by professionals. (Decoration scheme is of course musical: a score wrapping around one tier, a repeated motif of a trumpet and a rank of pipes, and the bride and groom figures are musicians, playing their respective instruments. Ain't it nice, to be able to simply write your ideas, and not have to figure out how to implement them?) At least, with her reception held in the parish hall, instead of some restaurant or ballroom, she didn't have to worry about a bunch of strangers screwing things up, like some of the horror stories I've read here . . . .

Thank you!  My DH says no more wedding cakes- he wants his kitchen (and food), family room, dining room and wife back!  I reminded him he has 3 nieces that have seen the pictures....

Your book sounds interesting!  My 1st daughter got married right after hubby had been out of town for six months, during which time I took all the Wilton classes and discovered the "University of YouTube"!  Her reception was at church, and we had a cookie bar.  (I had envisioned platters of decorated sugar cookies, then she moved the wedding up and only gave us six weeks to prepare.)  I baked dozens of cookies, and the ladies of the church donated.  We had so many cookies, that by the time we got to the cake, no one ate any!  We scrapped so many plans for her Christmas wedding, but in the end, only having six weeks to prepare led to a wonderful, simple ceremony and reception- and kept the price way down!!
