I really want to make a cake similar to this...I read on one of the threads that this was made from foam, but I want to make a two tiered version, or a tweaked 3 tiered version. Would it be possible to use a fat daddios pan for the bottom sphere, followed by the smaller Wilton ball as the next tier at an angle, and possibly a smaller, baseball size one at the opposite angle on top? If this is possible, how should I anchor it to make it steady/stable? TIA! :-)

you make your skeleton, your internal support first--then you simply add cake to that--i would use pvc pipe and assorted plumbing supplies-- i suggest you go to a big box store like lowe's or home despots (depot ;) where they have all the fiddly plumbing things out on display--all the elbows and joints and bladeeblas --you will need a flange to affix to a nice heavy square of mdf for stability for the base and then just start putting things together like tinker toys to make your stand--thread your cakes on voila --

since you are using small cakes you should be ok without boards -- probably --

when you look at the finished sphere--use x-ray vision and understand that only the decor make the spheres look askew--but inside they are normal horizontal cakes inside -- i hope you get what i mean--

i would recommend using rice krispie treats for the bottom layers--or bake off nice sturdy pound cake --

i'm not familiar with any particular fat daddio pan--what do you mean there? do they have a sphere shaped one or something?

you would have to use a small cake plate in there to hold the top two tiers up-- i'd use modeling choco to create the rounded bottom and then you could use rkt & cake for the rest--

there's just a lot to it-- hard to write it all out --

you also need to cut a hole in the cake plate so you can thread it onto your stand-- you need to fashion a stopper out of the plumbing materials so the plate stays in place at the right height-- you gotta have tracks cut out of the cakes/rkt so you can thread them onto your stand--

hope you can get an idea how to accomplish this out of what i wrote--

it's not for sissies
