Hey everyone!

I have a bride who wants this cake:

I can't tell if this is buttercream or fondant. I know how to do the cake with fondant, but I have no idea how to make it look like it is peeling. I have looked for tutorials and tips, but none of them seem to explain how to make it peel.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Studying the picture, I'd say it's buttercream roughly put on then marked with a fondant tool to make the small slashes around each layer then those are painted brown.  Same with the heart and initials.

I know this isn't instructions per se, but that's what I'd do.

It looks like fondant to me…and I think you would just make the fondant "peel". Act like the fondant it the layer of wood and peel it.
