Its pretty easy to colour a small amount of paste but if your covering tiers etc I have tried in the past to colour but no matter how much kneading when rolled out you see those waves of streaks.

Also when you see sugarpaste in stunning shades - again how do you get the correct colour without spending ages hit and miss? Are these achieved through palete mixing first?

I find buying ready made colours extremely expensive - I know that with dark colours its not an option to colour - i have done it but end up using nearly a pot of paste and then the SP gets wetter.

Thanks

I make my own Marshmallow Fondant and add candy melts for the stronger colors.  I do reds and black with no effort and very additional gel colors.

 Ingredients used for red fondant:
10oz Generic Mini Marshmallows (since I didn't need an entire batch)
Approximately 1 1/2 lbs C&H Powdered Sugar, Sifted
4oz (approx 1/2 Cup) melted Wilton Red Candy Melts
Americolor Super Red as needed (very little)
1 Tbs Water

Melt the marshmallow separate from the candy melts.  Once both melted mix them together and proceed to finishing the fondant.

I hope this helps

When making black do you use the same amount of candy melts and black gel?  Last time I made black MMF I had a hard time getting it away from the grayish purple color.  I have since then bought some Americolor black, just haven't used it yet.

yes use the same amount.  I use Americolor Black gel so you have it, use it for additional color.  This method gives a blacker fondant than starting with chocolate fondant and then adding color to make it black.

I'm not particularly bothered about primary colours its more tints and pastels really and dont intend to make paste from scratch.

My query is about using quality SP and adding colours to it.  Here in the UK we have quality SP and tastes ok and happy to add colour but havent the time to be making SP from scratch.  I usually start decorating around 9pm in the evening once the children have gone to bed so time is of the essence!!!!

I understand about the waves of color.  I get them also when I try to color white fondant.  I find it takes a lot of kneading to get rid of them.  I know because I knead and knead until they are all gone.  Sometimes I knead for 10 - 15 minutes before I do not see them.
