Hi there,
Starting cake club really early tonight because we have family coming in from out of town and I have no idea when they are actually arriving (driving) and what will happen after they get here. They may end up over at my mom's all night and I can hang out here or I may not be back on again at all...who knows at this point!
Anyways, my cake this week is a Day of the Dead inspired cake for my cousin's graduation. I'll post photos tomorrow night after the party so you guys can see it. Today is very rainy in Northern California so I have had no good natural light to photograph the cake yet. But tomorrow night is the party so I'll photograph the cake table so you can see what it all looks like.
Hope everyone's week went well!

Hi everyone, no pics for me this week. Had a great 5 days out the bush for Easter. I have been playing with modelling chocolate, trying to make a shaped head, and am failing dismally. It's been back in the fridge 7 times now. Much more user friendly in that respect (the mush back together) than gumpaste but less user friendly in how it heats up. I might be failing but I am not discouraged yet and intend to keep trying today.
Have fun at your party Kat.
Cazza,
Don't they usually put the modeling chocolate over a rice krispie treats form? I've never tried it but I hear it's great. Yummy to eat too! LOL!
Our guests just arrived, over at Mom's for now, but then it will be basketball on my tv. UGH. not a basketball fan. But wonderful to hang out with them!
At any cost I'll be able to check back in here every hour or so!

Hi everyone! It's been months and months since I have been on here. So much talent! I have two cakes tomorrow. A Frozen themed one and a fire breathing dragon. I love that a little girl choose the dragon theme.
A This one is from a few weeks ago. I mostly do kid's cakes so "elegant" adult design is hard for me. This was for a good friend, I wanted something simple and pretty--I was pretty happy with the result.
AMost of the snowflakes were piped royal icing that left to harden. A few were purchased cupcake toppers from a previous cupcake last minute disaster ;)
Thank you!
ACute stuff everyone! Finishing up several things. One that's completed is a wedding cake inspired by a painting the couple saw in New York. I have so many things this week. READY for Sunday!
Morgan,
Obviously they are into modern art! Do you know what, if anything, is the cake topper? What else is up this week? I'm actually fairly happy that I don't have plans. Some event stuff to tie a bow on but no cake work till the following week...leading up to Mother's Day here.

AI'm not sure if they even have one! It never came up haha. They are a very minimalist, artsy couple. She was very very descriptive which actually made my job much easier! I've also been messing around with macarons. Thinking if I get them right consistently I might offer them for Mother's Day. People have been asking me. I've gotten 3 good batches so far. Aiming for 5
Oh yeah...extremely minimalist! LOL! Oddly enough tho' I think that those cakes can be hard...nothing to camouflage mistakes!

Totally!
I am on a mission to get smooth lines and crisp edges. And flawless. So I am trying to practice every week.
This week it was my mum's birthday, she passed 5 years ago, and this year is the first year I haven't had my sister nearby as she emigrated to Canada this year :(
So, I made my mum's favourite cake - chocolate!! (filled with brigadeiro, a type of brazilian custard thing, hard to describe - but YUM)
This is the first time I made, and used ganache! Well, I loved it. However..... HOW do you cover it without tearing??!! I had a nightmare! I was hoping to be able to not put the top line on (you'll see in the pic). Anyway, 3 tries later and a lot of white icing in the bin, and this is what I managed to do.
It's also the first time I did Roses. I used the shawna mcgreevy tutorial, but they are awful, so clearly more practice needed.
As luck would have it, I got an email from Craftsy saying I could sign up to my first class for £6! ($9.99) so I have got the Jessica Harris clean lines one. Can't wait to get watching.
If anyone has any tips on covering the ganache without tearing I would be most grateful...
Have a good weekend everyone!

As usual, some very beautiful cakes on here tonight. Cara, that cake would have driven me mad! Kudos to you for doing such a great job.

ANo, I found a really helpful tutorial by Ann Reardon. Although it didn't work 100% I was a good start! Cara
Oh my gosh what great cakes! I've done a minecraft cake and NEVER again! UGH.
As for covering ganache. I've never tried it so I have no tips on how to cover it without tearing.
Here is my cake. The cake was for my cousins Master's Degree graduation (that happened today) and she did her thesis on Edgar Allen Poe. So, since this is her last year of school (altho' she's a college teacher so there is still school!) and Poe was her subject, I chose a Day of the Dead theme for her.

It's been a lovely weekend but looking forward to a whole week off! I "may" start on the flowers I need for the Mother's Day's cakes but nothing is "due" this week.
