I was just asked by a friend of mine to make her wedding cake for her in September. She wants a 3 tiered cake for 140 people. No fondant, just simply frosted and decorated with flowers.

This is my first wedding cake. The decorating part I've got down but I have NO IDEA about cake size servings. What size cake pans will I need to feed that many people? How many layers do I make per tier? Any suggestions would be  helpful!

AI don't have my chart in front of me, but that is wayyyyy too much cake to cram into three tiers. That would be at least a 4, probably a 5 tier for the way I design.

Not sure how clear this will come out, as it's a screenshot of a file from my phone, but this is a chart I put together showing different serving amounts with various sizes of pans. I never bought 15" round pans, and I despise squares, so I didn't work out many combinations with squares.

AWhere it says Double Bar, that means double barrel tiers where it says Mixed, that means squares squares and rounds together and s/r/s means square round square from top down, and obviously r/s/r means round square round. Towery means one inch difference between tier sizes.

A6/10/14=130 6/8/10/12=134

That's for rounds.

AI can't speak from a baker's standpoint because I do not make wedding cakes, but as a bride. My wedding cake was 4 tiered square for 140 people. And I just remember how freaking big it looked. Are they saving the top tier for their anniversary? If they are...well, you can't count that one toward guest servings, so you are automatically up to 4 tiers.

ACan anyone who comes along to this thread please flag my post, the one that I posted that chart in? I need to get it removed asap. I want to fix something and can't delete it myself for some reason. The more it gets flagged, the quicker the response from an admin I reckon. I'd appreciate it!

AIf you have an iPhone and $1.99 to spare, download Cake Stacker the app. It's saved my butt so many times during tastings. You just type in servings, serving size, shape of tiers, and it gives you every choice you have out there. it's truly a blessing.
