I donated this cake to our school auction. 8" layers with divine chocolate cake with ganache in between layers. A pool of ganache on top and chocolate buttercream around the outside. Fondant gnome-themed decor. My brother and I built the cake stand as part of the donation. It went for $50 total. What think ye? What would you have priced it for sale?
Sounds like you paid them to take it. Only $50 including the stand? For auctions, you want to put a dollar amount for what the item is worth, that usually helps them go for more. Want to know how much it's worth? Search for "cake pricing." No one can tell you what's it's worth because everyone's costs/markets are different. For example, that stand would probably go for about $20 by itself in my area.
AIf she had sold it to the public, yeah, that would have been a travesty. But she knew (hopefully) that any money made at a school auction was better than nothing. That's fifty dollars that went straight into the school fund. Auctions don't make for good income, people aren't going to be interested in a high dollar perishable item they have to make plans around right then.

I guess I forgot about school demographics as well. Public school parents will generally have less funds to bid than a private one too. I went to both, but it's been a looooong while, lols. Although I remember the public school being more fun ;)
