A“Thanks for your quote, the wedding cake is beautiful but slightly out of my price range… I am also looking to price an undecorated birthday cake to decorate myself, how much would a 4 tier undecorated birthday cake be with the bottom tier 10 inches?”

Help! I can’t see a thing for all the wool you have pulled in front of my eyes!

HAHAHAHA!  Wow....that is BOLD!

The snarky side of me would totally do it and leave LAUGHING after delivery.  But not before a very sarcastic "GOOD LUCK with the decorating.  I'm sure your wedding...I mean...4 tier birthday cake will turn out just PERFECT for your special day."

Quote them a MUCH HIGHER price and explain to them that you don't want their decorating skills, or lack thereof, represented on a cake that you have baked.

Cuz you know they'd probably tell everyone that YOU decorated it when it comes out looking like TOTAL a$$.

Too right!.... I actually hadn't thought of that!!

I've had it the other way round: one girl bought a 'decorating kit' which consisted of a topper, a lump of fondant and a dozen cutter cutouts then claimed she did it all herself... She did bake the cake and cover it I guess!

A... I Should totally use the hidden design inside the cake idea, you know like the rainbows and ladybug ones, but instead have a little message visible in each slice: "baked, but not decorated by Grays Cakes" Lol

...I just put that message into an anogram solver since, were I a guest, I'd be playing at rearranging the letters.... I have just had to leave the office I can't stop laughing!

We've had customers like that.  We charge them the same price as we would a decorated cake.  Some of them are fine with that while others go ballistic thinking it'd be cheaper.

Um, no, it's not cheaper.  If you're too lazy to bake/ice the cake yourself, you're going to PAY for it :-D

AI'm not sure I understand the problem. She can't afford to buy a decorated cake from you, but she likes your cakes and wants to buy just the cake part. Isn't most of the time spent on each cake on the decorating part? So you could price it slightly lower than your decorated cakes and still make a higher profit, right? Personally, I feel like the response should be to give her a price for the rounds (uniced) and let her know that she will need to find a tiered stand since she won't be able to stack the layers effectively herself and not have them slide all over.

I kinda feel for her because I did a similar thing with my wedding. I think I only got 3 tiers, on the smaller side, paid somewhere around $125-150, and was just paying for the cake. It's a little different because the place I got mine from did *not* decorate cakes at all. But still, that was the cake I loved the taste of and that's what I wanted, and if I had to set it up and decorate it myself in order to get it then that's just what I would have to do. I can't imagine lying about who decorated my own wedding cake so I guess that's why I'm not wrapping my head around someone else lying about it. I don't understand what the point would be.

Though I do think it's weird that she specified that it's a birthday cake. If you just want to buy undecorated cake, does it really matter what occasion it's for?

AI don't think the OP would have minded the lady being straight up and honest about the whole thing. Just the fact the person outright lied. If you would lie about cake I hate to think what else one would lie about. Just makes no sense.

Tsaria, if they cake came out looking good then she would of course say she did it but if it turns out looking like a hot mess (which it would more then likely be) most people would not want to be associated with it and try to blame someone else.  This is something that is extremely common and happens in all facets of life.

The prices of my cakes include a certain amount of decorations, I only charge for things like 3-D objects, rhinestone, feathers, toppers or things similar.  So a simple polka dotted cake will be the same price as a cake with harlequin diamonds with pearls or piped scrolls etc....  Now if it was a design that would take a lot more time like hand painting or the like then I would price that higher.  So it would not be cheaper for me or most other bakers for an undecorated cake then a simple decorated cake.  We still have to make the cake batter, bake each layer, fill each layer, crumb coat each layer, cover each tier in fondant and stack each tier.  If someone really wants to save money on a cake then they need to make the cake themselves.

ABecause brides are told that generally whatever they are purchasing for their wedding costs more, just because it's for a wedding. And some decorators outthere will price a three tiered cake for a wewedding higher than the exact same cake for a birthday. Whether or not there are legitimate reasons and or higher costs to the decorator involved because it's a wedding cake, matters not, they're just trained from the start to expect higher costs for wedding items.

Ah, maybe I am misinterpreting then. When I read undecorated I think just the cake itself - no filling or frosting or fondant or stacking or anything.

AI charge the same for a plain cake as for a decorated one...making a plain cake perfectly smooth isn't easy. But you have to give her credit for trying to be sneaky about it. Why, you'd never suspect that she was up to something!
