I have been trying to get my business going but am stuck waiting for the cottage food license. It has now been 8 months since I first applied. They called me in December and said that I had to add things to my application (which weren't written on the original application to begin with...grrr.) But, I have not heard from them since. I have emailed and called. I don't want to be overly pushy because I need them to do this for ME, but is it normal for it to take this long? I am starting to get frustrated because I am going to have to renew all of the licensing that I had to do just to apply for the cottage food license in a few months and I haven't been able to advertise and make cakes to "reimburse" myself for these fees. Maybe this is more just venting.

AIt depends on what state you live in, as all states have different cottage food law requirements, but yeah that sounds like it's taking WAY TOO LONG. If it were me, I would go directly to their office and speak to them in person. I would also request a reimbursement or extension for the fees that were paid. They've cost you business, when all you were trying to do was abide by their law. Be respectfully assertive and push to get yourself on the top of their priority list!

I agree that is really long and that you should go in and speak to someone in person.  I called and e-mailed about mine after waiting about 8 weeks.  When I spoke with the guy handling my permit he said he was caught up in some food borne disease issue in the area and moved my renewal date to when he actually issued the permit and not when I applied which was good because it was the end of the year already.  It took a few times of prodding to move him along.  My last e-mail to him was simply, "Ron?"  All told I applied in late Sept "13 actually got the permit in mid Jan "14.
