I have been asked to do a cake for an 80 year old lady incorporating key points in her life - I have all of these random things but am struggling how to put them together cohesively.

HI, Just an idea but maybe several small cakes each with a different theme????

For some reason, my number one requested cake is number cakes with little fondant pieces on it to personalize it.

What I usually end up doing is pick a few small things from each area/interest and position them together on the cake.  I would need more info to help you develop that idea for the interests you wrote but I can give you an example of one I did recently.

70 shaped cake

these were my "little groups" of things:

1)  sewing machine, spool of thread, buttons

2)  stack of books, ruler, apple

3) rolling pin, wooden spoon, little tiered cake

I like the idea of little groups of things for each - Im gonna get my thinking cap on around that idea. Cake isn't until July but will post when its done

AWhat about a suitcase cake with the luggage label, school badge and photos on the side and the other things (wedding dress, ball of yarn & knitting needles, and gardening gloves) "falling out" of the slightly open suitcase?

Thanks for you post, all of the key parts will either be edible images, gumpaste or modelling chocolate - it is a way to put them together without seeming 'just chucked on' that I am after.
